The limitation is the 1TB. Come on apple give us at least 2TB in this day and age.

Arguably better than the Costco deal that ended yesterday (M3 Pro 16' 36/512 $2399, or M3 Max 36/1T $2999).
But if you can hold until black friday, aggressive macbook deals are on the way.

Regular users don't need this. For professional software development, video editing, 3D rendering, large language models, that sort of thing, this is a great machine.

But even as a professional I would get a MacBook Air for my personal (web browsing) machine and a windows PC for gaming. Exactly like you said. You are right it doesn't make sense for most people. No one is trying to convince you otherwise.
As a side note to this although I agree, but because Macs are not upgradeable down the road, it stands to reason that its also a good idea to get as much as you can afford now so you wont have to upgrade sooner rather than later. I use my machine for web development and lightroom and photoshop and some premiere and coming from a vanilla M1 2020 model i cant wait for this beast.

I'm not finding any availability - anyone see one in their zip code? Anyone finding someone willing to pricematch?

Update: after many trial and errors, finally had a pickup option pop up for my local store. After many failures due to "network connection failure" from BB website, finally got it to transact. Crossing my fingers that it actually gets shipped and is available for pickup later this week.

Hard to say really, because you could also just buy a cheaper machine and upgrade at a quicker cadence.

On the other hand Tim Cook has held 8GB RAM in the baseline model since 2017 so maybe one shouldn't hold one's breath …

So I just got the 36 gb version 3 weeks ago for the same price. Debating if it's worth returning and getting this one. Do I need 48 gb no but it's the same price.
You also get the 40 core GPU, more memory bandwidth and (I think) two more cores with this version. Definitely worth the effort of refunding/replacing

If you initially went for 36 gb (you have a reason here I assume) then yes definitely you should go for 48 gb for the same price alone , but here soc is different too as added benefit.
You should have return window till September to decide and return as per your choice.

Yeah, this is a really solid deal, only a hundred less than the M2 Max 96GB 2TB real I got from Microcenter a few months back.

M4 Max must be around the corner. No way Apple would let an authorized reseller drop their flagship by 4 figures otherwise. Time to clear inventory.

Picked one up to refresh a 3.5 year old 14" M1 Pro. Stacked new BB Visa ($150 instant reward certificate, $500 "promised" but not counting on it #becauseprofits). Included my old M1 Pro as a trade-in ($750) and will wait until I get the new one to commit to letting go of it. This laptop will be for business use so the write-off brings the out of pocket cost down to $1650 or thereabout, before Best Buy reward certificates. To those looking at machines like this as some sort of exotic car, THIS is how you do it.
Same here for the rewards. 15% back for the first day of Best Buy credit card usage is insane stacked on the deal price, but reasonable for good credit card sign-up bonuses/incentives, so I'll gladly take it.

And, now I'm watching closely to see if they actually honor what they promised.

I combed through all the terms and conditions / fine print, and see no reason or excuse they have not to give that 15% -- and I am ready to raise a ruckus. Promising something to get somebody to sign up for a credit card, then reneging, is no joking mater.

Maybe it can run llama 3.1 405b (jk probably still takes a while to get a response or may not be enough to run at all)
