DOT regulations:
* No more than 90 pounds total in an enclosed vehicle. (Car, SUV, Van).
* No more than 45 pounds in a single cylinder in an enclosed vehicle. (Car, SUV, Van).
* Up to 1,000 pounds in an open bed pickup truck or trailer. (Has to be open, not enclosed).
* No special driver license needed, just a regular driver license.

In addition to DOT regulations:
* Most places will only fill a 100 pound cylinder if it is in a secure and upright position. Tied down with rope or strapped in the pickup bed. Not unsecured and rolling/moving around.

So, to haul around a 100 pound tank; just need a regular driver license, a pickup truck or open trailer, and some kind of way to secure the tank.

Costco used to do, but I found tractor supply will purge and fill charge by gallon like Costco did.

I keep a couple full to run a dual fuel generator in case of emergency. Petrol will spoil over time. Propane keeps indefinitely.

I made a simple brace for my truck out of 2x4s that secured the bottom of the tank. I use four straps to secure the top.

Wish they put the valves with the full/empty gauge on all their tanks. My 20's have them.

Don't you usually get those from a propane supplier? This has to be transported vertically and full is over 180 lbs.

Locked? I've never had one that's "locked". All propane tanks they sell have to fit on standard grills, which means they also have to fit on standard refill adapters.. Filling them is no different than any other tank.
Look up Tri-Safe II (TSII, TS2) valves. Maybe they've discontinued the practice in recent years.

According to vapor pressure, it's either full or almost empty. Liquified gases need to be measured by weight.

This is the correct response.

You could technically also use liquid depth, but that's obviously difficult with an explosive fuel. They do sell stickers you can put vertically on a tank and pour hot water on it to show level.

My Weber Summit gas grill has a scale built into in. It's accurate enough for grill planning purposes.

One local place by me has a refill station, but they won't refill 20# tanks, only exchange. They fill larger tanks🤔.

UHaul had been the best for a suburbanite like myself. If you can get through on the phone, verify that someone who is propane trained is working that day, and until when.
They fill 20# and 40# for me (after checking the date).

Can't speak to the 100#, but I can't see why not.

I went with Mendards 40# (after 11% rebates) due to ease of handling (for generator use)

Hey Griswold. Where do you think you're gonna put a tree propane tank that big?

The 15 pounds is a DOT thing. The propane tanks you use are DOT tanks. Since they don't know the climate or conditions you will subject your propane tank to they can only fill it to 15 pounds or 80%. During the summer the pressure in the tank goes up since the ambient temperatures are also higher.

I saw a guy get turned away at U-Haul cause he wanted more then 4 tanks filled but had a SUV. The u-haul guy told him he can only do 4 and if he wanted them all he needed to bring them back in non enclosed vehicle such as a pickup truck.

I have a 500 gallon non DOT stationary tank at my house. The propane company will also only fill it to 80% during the summer but during the winter when the heater is running they will fill up to 90%.

The rules are there for a reason (to keep these things from blowing up), if anyone is trying to cheat you its the propane tank manufactures. They should be calling them 15# tanks not 20 pounds. Its same issue with hard drives... The manufactures sell you un-formatted space .

- propane tanks can be recertified [frangergas.com]. There is nothing magical about 12 years. Apparently it costs around $20, so probably not worth it for most people but places like BR have such volume it's undoubtedly much cheaper for them.
- BJ's sells a FULL 20 lb refill for $15. BR is only 15 lb. They claim it's for "safety" but yeah it's really to make more money off you. We also have a local farm store that has occasional coupons for $10/20 lb but they aren't convenient for me. That is to say, BJ's is a large chain on the eastern seaboard, but there are a lot of local places that sell propane inexpensively as well.
- RN a 20lb Worthington tank is $50 @ BJ's, unfilled. HD seems to be roughly the same but a bit more $$.

So let's say I need another tank for whatever reason. I could go to BJ's, get one for $50 then fill it with 20 lb of propane for $15, net $65 for a tank and 20 lb of propane. OR I could get a tank for free from MP or BN (not all of them are trash and rusted), take it to BR for $20, get a better tank and 15 lb of propane. I'm around $40 ahead of the game (if you account for the 5lb of propane difference) which is 3 refills of 20 lb. BR is everywhere, not just HD and Lowes, even our regional job lot place has BR, so it's not like I have to drive way out of my way to do it. That also assumes the tank I get for free is trash, which they all aren't. Heck I've had people give me FULL tanks just because they were downsizing or most recently, getting out of the RV game.

Sure it is. That's why I get 20 lb at BJ's but BR just so happens to sell me 15 lb "for my safety". HAs absolutely nothing to do with them giving me 25% less propane for more money.

BTW there was a class action suit against Amerigas [cohenmilstein.com] a few years ago for this; actually BR was implicated as well but that suit is still ongoing.

Take a read on opd valve. Most places won't refill a non opd tank anymore. It will overflow at 80%. Any vendor filling a DOT tank above 80% is liable in case of accidents. If you think you can be be cleaver and bring a different tank you can't. If you want to transport a propane tank on the highway you can only use a DOT tank

If 15 pounds of gas is not enough you need to look at buying a bigger tank not trying to find someone to play fast and loose with the rules.

Well BJ's is a pretty reputable chain, not some mom and pop farm store:

https://help.bjs.com/hc/en-us/art...-club-fill

They fill using a scale that is mechanically connected to a shutoff and set to 20 lb.

https://www.poorespropane.com/wei...pane-tank/

Typically, a full 20-pound tank weighs 37 pounds because the weight of an empty cylinder—also called the Tare Weight (TW)—is 17 pounds. It holds 20 pounds of fuel, which is called its Water Capacity (WC), adding up to 37 pounds.

An OPD valve limits to 80% which is around 16 pounds. You physically can't put more into a new OPD style propane tank.

They should be charging you by the pound. If your tank weighed 20# when you started and they put in 10# then they should be charging you for 10#.

If they are charging you per tank they are betting that you still have a couple pounds left in the bottle. This is how the exchange tank guys are so profitable most people return their tank when it's low not when it's empty.

Might not be a bad idea to get a solar + battery/inverter setup if you can afford it.. never hurts to have some redundancy / extra backup capability.
Don't have the funds to do this currently, but I read someone's solution being:
1. battery backup on APC mode for 3-4hrs
2. power on generator to charge the battery for 1-2hrs
rinse/repeat

Hopefully I can mimick that one day instead of running my generator all day/night.

Most cylinders come vacuum purged now and do not require an initial purge.
