I've been playing the new account bonus game for decades; this is the best bonus I've ever seen.

https://support.tastytrade.com/su...3000678965

New customers who open and fund a tastytrade account with $2,000 or more in cash or by an account transfer (ACATS) [*edit* including the value of securities in the transfered accounts, confirmed by Tastytrade] and enter MYNEWBONUS into their referral code field when initially registering with tastytrade will receive a cash bonus. The bonus amount is dependent on the initial funding amount. There is a 12-month withdrawal hold on the initial funding amount to retain the cash bonus. You can find each tier's funding threshold and resulting payout in the table below.

Deposited Funds Cash Bonus
$2,000-$4,999 $50
$5,000-$24,999 $100
$25,000-$99,999 $500
$100,000-$249,999 $2,000
$250,000 - $499,999 $3,000
$500,000 - $999,999 $4,000
$1,000,000+ $5,000

There isn't actually a place to enter the promotion code until the account registration is complete; then it's entered in the Manage/Summary tab as shown here [tastytrade.com]before transferring in the other account.

Separately, Robinhood Gold will give you 1% bonus (paid over two years) on all cash deposits in any account (and all securities transferred into an IRA only). So you may do best separately transferring your cash and stock to these two brokerages separately.

*Edit* Tastytrade confirmed it applies to securities accounts, not just cash.

I have realized it is possible to interpret the terms of bonus offer to apply to transfers of accounts filled with cash only, as opposed to transfers of accounts filled with securities. The former is a significantly worse offer. I have reached out to tasty trade to learn their interpretation.

That's how I read it.

I also read it as saying if you take any money out, you lose the entire bonus.

Those two terms made me distinctly not interested. I will take some cash out of my brokerage account - not most of it, but some.

I think the provision is that if you withdraw money within the year to bring the account below the threshold for getting the bonus, you lose the bonus. Anyway, even at the lowest contribution levels for each threshold, this bonus would be below the 1% that Robin Hood gives for cash, so not a good deal if it is only on cash. But a great deal if it's on account transfers. I will report back on that.

I think you should check your math. It's pretty good under $150k or so. Not great for big accounts.

I could totally see depositing $100k and parking it in a one-year treasury, corporate bond, or brokered CD for the 2% rate boost. It's not worth breaking my current CDs to do it though.

$50/$2000 = 2.5%
$100/$5000 = 2%
$500/$25,000 = 2%
$2k/$100k = 2%
$3k/$250k = 1.2%
$4k/$500k = 0.8%
$5k/$1M = 0.5%

Agreed, and thanks for pointing that out. This is actually a great deal on low-value cash accounts. Not sure if tastytrade has moneymarket mutual funds if you want to leave your cash as cash and get the extra return.

Final update here: TT confirmed the bonus applies to the value of securities in transfered accounts and paid out my bonus.

How do they handle bonds?

I have a little over 100k in corporate and municipal bonds. Thinking of jumping on this for the extra $2k.

Id save the stocks and cash in my brokerage account for a better deal. Still hoping Merrill brings back $1000 on $250k.

Signed up for bonus in March 2024. You can't move $ out within the first 30 days unless you call TT for manual override. Received the bonus within one week. Transferred proceeds(from stock sales and dividends) via ACH to Fidelity. No problem even when the balance is below the minimum qualifying deposit.

Note that TT will charge one penny even if you sold one share of stock. The TT trading platform is fast, but changing open order is limit to price only.

Bond = OK as long as the balance is 100K when it hits TT.

Not a problem. Schwab values them over $100k, and with rates dropping, their value has to go up (not that I'm selling or care about current value - I'm keeping them to maturity)

Did this deal at the $100k for $2k bonus tier. They have paid. Update.
  • Initial transfer of 100k of corporate and municipal bonds was not accepted. The only bonds they accept are treasuries.
  • Second attempt with 100k of an S&P 500 ETF was accepted on 10/4.
  • At some point, 2000 tradable dollars showed up in my account. Not sure exactly what date they appeared, but it'll probably appear on my first statement. They did not send an email announcing it, and their trading platform/website is confusing to me and I can't find the transaction. Their platform is made for active traders, which I am not - I'm just holding on to those ETFs.
  • I intend to invest the $2k bonus in VSS (Vanguard International Midcap ETF)
  • Per the bonus agreement, I do not intend to withdraw funds until November of next year, at which point I'll probably transfer everything back to Schwab or chase another bonus.

So you "transferred" an S&P ETF? So it's just transferred in brokerage, but it isn't actually a sale and rebuy? So you are not going to take a capital gains tax hit?

Correct. I had to fill out a form for a partial acat transfer from my main brokerage.

I didn't sell any securities, so no captal gain.
But, I fully expect a 1099 coming for the $2000 bonus.

Note: They paid the bonus 1 week after I funded the account (10/4 funded, 10/11 paid).

Happy with that.

I remember when they first came out and I followed their videos and stuff.. glad to see their still around.. but now I am spoiled by not paying fees to a platform on opening options , commissions, etc.. so.. but good for them
