There's a beta BIOS to get USB 4.0 that works great on the 2022-X13s to enable compatibility with third party eGPUs, and the 2022-Z13s have Thunderbolt, so this specific XG eGPU is only necessary to upgrade the 2021-X13s, anyone else spending their money on this instead of a proper enclosure and GPU, is foolish at best, even if you had money to burn.
You are a fool at best for thinking this is EOL when we already know that a new Z13 is coming next year. Also, Thunderbolt only has half the bus lanes that the XG Mobile allows meaning that this will actually comfortably outperform an RTX docked through thunderbolt to a laptop. Also, with Thunderbolt docked GPUs there are issues with charging the laptops too at the same time the GPU is plugged in, so chances are that you will need to still have the laptop plugged in to the power supply that it came with in addition to he thunderbolt connection to the GPU. Meanwhile, with the ROG XG, there is no need for that at all.

So in that sense, yes, this eGPU is for EOL devices.

The new ROG Flow Z13 does not have the port according to the leaked diagrams. The new ROG Ally X dropped the port too no? I dont follow the other models but most likely their 2025 variants will drop it too.
So in that sense, yes, this eGPU is for EOL devices.
It's like they are Asus fanboys and employees trying to gaslight users trying to shed light on this matter.
You are 100% correct, the Ally X dropped the port.
Meaning their flagship XG eGPU is *NOT* compatible with their flagship handheld.
The XG port is a modified oculink port, made to be incompatible with existing oculink port devices.
All they did is grab an under-utilized but capable port, modified it to make it proprietary, and used it to deliver the required bandwidth to their custom eGPU.
If I had to come up with a guess on how this happened, I'd say, a brilliant Engineering team inside Asus came up with the idea, but then a finance bro asked, "can you make it proprietary so we can sell this exclusively??"
But the truth is that no one is continuing development of this oculink port they based their designs on, meaning it is EOL already, it's on its way out and USB 4++ and Thunderbolt 5+ will be a replacement.
Like I said earlier, even the 2022-X13 that forcefully needed the XG port for eGPUs, now has a limited compatibility with third party eGPUs through a USB 4.0 beta bios, giving users more options.
The $200 saved can put toward a nice gaming monitor or save for upgrade down the line.
Most modern games offer cloud save, so transition between the Ally to the desktop would be seamless.
If this was $1,000 or less I can at least take the card out and use to build like a mini-ITX or put in the ROG NUC. But at $1500 this is still too bad of a value proposition especially it's EOL.
