I'd buy at $500.. like mentioned above, this is an EOL product for EOL laptops. The target audience is so niche, I doubt these would "fly off the shelf" any time soon.

There's a beta BIOS to get USB 4.0 that works great on the 2022-X13s to enable compatibility with third party eGPUs, and the 2022-Z13s have Thunderbolt, so this specific XG eGPU is only necessary to upgrade the 2021-X13s, anyone else spending their money on this instead of a proper enclosure and GPU, is foolish at best, even if you had money to burn.

Jesus Christ l, way to spread misinformation. This is the most powerful mobile RTX4090 you can get on the market. While laptops go up to 175W on their RTX 4090, this goes much higher as the XG Mobile RTX 4090 is a 330W device. This is literally at this price a better deal couple with a X13 that goes on sale for $1100 multiple tomes per month, than a ROG Strix 4090 on sale for $3K.

You are a fool at best for thinking this is EOL when we already know that a new Z13 is coming next year. Also, Thunderbolt only has half the bus lanes that the XG Mobile allows meaning that this will actually comfortably outperform an RTX docked through thunderbolt to a laptop. Also, with Thunderbolt docked GPUs there are issues with charging the laptops too at the same time the GPU is plugged in, so chances are that you will need to still have the laptop plugged in to the power supply that it came with in addition to he thunderbolt connection to the GPU. Meanwhile, with the ROG XG, there is no need for that at all.
The connector is proprietary with only a handful of devices being compatible it's definitely on it way out if Asus does not announce other compatible devices.

And now for actual discussion of this deal. This is a very good deal and it matches the cheapest this has ever gone for. This is compatible with the ROG Ally, Flow X13, Flow X16, and the Flow Z13. It basically makes it so that the laptop functions almost fully as a processor. It turns your laptop into basically the equivalent of a Desktop RTX 4080.

Let them fools be.. Not even the newest Ally has compatibility for this garbage proprietary port. I dunno who they are trying to convince of what LOL, they ain't even adding anything relevant to the discussion.

I would bite at $750. $1500 is still way too much unless one of the compatible devices is your main machine.

Ughhh. No they are not. The hell are you even talking about. This hooks up to the ROG Flow Z13, Flow X13, Flow X16, and the ROG Ally (16 GB RAM). All of those devices are doing well and all are alive. Heck, we already know that ASUS will launch a new Flow Z13 tablet in 2025. But sure, these are EOL even though theit latest model was just introduced last year and there has not been an update to processors by Intel, AMD, nor Nvidia GPUs since then.
The new ROG Flow Z13 does not have the port according to the leaked diagrams. The new ROG Ally X dropped the port too no? I dont follow the other models but most likely their 2025 variants will drop it too.

So in that sense, yes, this eGPU is for EOL devices.

It's like they are Asus fanboys and employees trying to gaslight users trying to shed light on this matter.

You are 100% correct, the Ally X dropped the port.

Meaning their flagship XG eGPU is *NOT* compatible with their flagship handheld.

The XG port is a modified oculink port, made to be incompatible with existing oculink port devices.

All they did is grab an under-utilized but capable port, modified it to make it proprietary, and used it to deliver the required bandwidth to their custom eGPU.

If I had to come up with a guess on how this happened, I'd say, a brilliant Engineering team inside Asus came up with the idea, but then a finance bro asked, "can you make it proprietary so we can sell this exclusively??"

But the truth is that no one is continuing development of this oculink port they based their designs on, meaning it is EOL already, it's on its way out and USB 4++ and Thunderbolt 5+ will be a replacement.

Like I said earlier, even the 2022-X13 that forcefully needed the XG port for eGPUs, now has a limited compatibility with third party eGPUs through a USB 4.0 beta bios, giving users more options.

If I owned an Ally and I had $1500 to spare, why not just buy a gaming desktop? $1300 can get you a Legion Tower 5 with 4070 Super (which would be on par with this card), and would offer much better cooling and upgradability down the line.

The $200 saved can put toward a nice gaming monitor or save for upgrade down the line.

Most modern games offer cloud save, so transition between the Ally to the desktop would be seamless.

If this was $1,000 or less I can at least take the card out and use to build like a mini-ITX or put in the ROG NUC. But at $1500 this is still too bad of a value proposition especially it's EOL.

Tempted to get this for my Ally so I can have high end gaming on the go during trips or holiday visits at the relatives. But I see this dropping further for the holidays.
