Trade-in values are based not just on your trade, but also on what model you're buying. When trading an iPhone 12 / 13, you'll get the best trade value when buying a similar model of new Pixel. For example:
iPhone 12 / 13 Pro will get a $999 credit toward a Pixel 9 Pro (update: now $899 credit for 12 Pro)

Though a $100 Best Buy gift card is better for most people than a $100 Google Store credit, so that's a factor too.

The eBay refurbished ones are sure to have 30 day free returns (and truthfully they're usually the same price as used). At least that was my experience with the iPhone 11 for Pixel 8 trade deal.

My math says
$270 iPhone 12 ($250 + tax)
$174 P9 Out the Door after trade-in ($100 for 256GB + $74 tax)
$444 Out the door for P9 256GB + $100GC
I think that's in line with typical black Friday Pixel deals, but without having to give up my current phone.
