90% of morons on this thread will ruin the deal by asking dumb questions to Best Buy and possibly altering them to check trade in phone in details. Just keep your mouth shut when you go there to pick up the phone

Google had a similar promotion a while back with the pixel tablet. I traded in an old iPad 6 or something for a trade in credit of 399 towards a pixel tablet. The tablet came out free. The high trade in values only lasted like a day.
That pixel tablet deal was a mistake. Google debated whether to honor it or not, in the end they honored.

Samsung trade-ins are upfront, aren't they ? They will only charge you value of the trade in if they don't receive your trade in or it doesn't meet the criteria. So cash back would be based on the upfront cost you paid during your order. In this case, we will get a refund to our credit card so not sure how that will work. I guess have to wait and see.
I'm not at all familiar with the cashback deals. However, just a comment about the charge versus refund thing … I placed an order for the Pixel on Wed and the charge still hasn't gone through. It shows as "pending" with the full amount, but it doesn't show up as a charge nor count on my current balance. In the past, I've seen similar things happen and they don't end up being actually charged until an item is shipped, etc. I wonder if that may be the case with something like this and there will never actually be a charge/refund, but instead the initial charge won't actually complete until the transaction is done with the actual final amount due.

It wouldn't have lasted 3 days as a mistake. Especially considering that they already reduced the trade in values yesterday. It took someone high enough up to make that decision, and it still was a high value for another 24 hours. If this was all a mistake, then it was the mother of all mistakes.

Honestly; the best thing to have done was ordering a phone when you had the chance with the iPhone 12 Pro as your trade even if you didn't have an iPhone 12 Pro on hand. That problem is very easy to solve with Craigslist/OfferUp and an afternoon on the weekends.
I'll have to remember this tactic next time!

I ordered a Pixel 8 for $499 on 8/2 with an iPhone 12 trade-in for $445, to pickup in-store on 8/12 because the local BB was out of stock on 8/2. BB immediately placed a pending/hold of $545.66 ($499 + 9..35% tax) on my card. On 8/10, that hold dropped off. I went to the store on 8/12 to pickup/trade-in. Immediately BB placed a charge of $545.66 on the card, it changed from pending to actual charge on 8/13. BB issued a refund of $486.61 ($445 + 9.35% tax) on 8/13. It changed from Pending to actual refund on 8/14. See attachment.

With my Pixel 9 128GB phone order of $799 with an iPhone 12 trade-in for $799, BB placed a hold of $873.71 ($799 + tax) on the card on 8/13. When I pick it up on 8/22, it probably will become a real charge, then the next day BB will issue a refund for the same $873.71 amount.

I just canceled my 1st order which was placed 2 days ago. that was a pixel 9 pro order.

Today I saw Pixel 9 Pro XL was available and could be pick-up in store. then I placed an order again.

Gotcha! I thought you were able to switch the Pixel 9 Pro order for pickup. I was in the same situation. I realized its a risk mailing in a phone I bought from Amazon as trade-in. I cancelled my Pixel 9 Pro order and placed an order for an XL instead for instore pickup and trade-in.

That was hashed over and over in the last few days.

Interesting. There's some kind of odd variation in how things work with the promotional trades at Best Buy sometimes in my experience. For instance, when I did the Pixel 7 deal with an XR trade, I believe they initially placed a hold of $500 on my card. I did two orders and they were processed differently even between those two. When I did the pickup, one came through with a final charge $39 (the expected final amount for that one). However, my second one was charged $149 and then they issued a credit of $110 back as a refund. The entire thing was rather confusing at the time, as I've probably mentioned in previous posts. It's almost like they have two ways of dealing with trade-in values, one of which acts like a price-adjustment and doesn't even result in a charge. And then another way which acts as a more traditional refund / credit. If that's the case, it would kind of make sense for the promotional portion of the trade value to be processed as the price adjustment way since it acts more like a coupon, etc and also would account for not allowing people to return items for credit on the promotional part of their trade. But this is just a lot of speculation … I don't really understand how they do things with these deals in some respects, but there seems to be a lot of variation that doesn't always add up. In my case, it led to me being charged tax on two different amounts also ($39 on one and $150 on the other). It almost seems like the first one mistakenly processed both parts of the trade value the same while the second one broke out the actual trade value separately from the promotional portion. And I've seen reports of some people like in Cali getting charged tax on the full amount. I'm not sure if that's related with variations like that, but it always jumps to mind when I see varying details like that. It makes me wonder if the way those transactions are handled could possibly vary by state due to how tax structures are handled (tax situations on coupons/discounts/credits can get very complicated when it comes to how they're handled between different states).

I did four Pixel 8 deals with iPhone trade-in at BB in the last few weeks. The order with a carrier sign-up (Verizon) had the trade-in value applied directly against the price of the phone, and BB made only ONE charge for the difference + tax. That was much simpler to understand. The orders without carrier sign-up were charged full price + tax, then they refunded the trade-in value + tax.

If you live in one of the states (CA, CO, etc) that charge tax on the full price but don't refund tax on the trade-in value then you ended up paying more out of pocket.
