Funny thing about this. I ordered this a while back, and they messed up at the warehouse. I ordered 1, but they sent me 1 case, which had 3 units in it.
That happened to me once with Amazon. I ordered one bottle of eye drop but they sent me 3. When I called them up, they told me to keep the extra Wink

Costco had the combo smoke/CO detector on sale couple weeks ago for around $55 for 2.

If you need CO detection, its best to just buy a smoke/CO detector combo and replace your wall/ceiling mounted smoke only detector. At least in IL, by code at least 1 wall-mounted smoke detector is required in each bedroom and kitchen. Just 1 less device.

This is the regular price. Under $15 is now rare unless you buy a multipack. Better to keep the one near your bedrooms at the 3'-4' height where your head is on the bed or you can die while sleeping. Up on the ceiling is not recommended as the only unit. I have bought many for all my places over the past 10 years. Good product, does last over 7 years.

Are CO detectors only needed if you have a gas stove or furnace? If everything is electric should I get one?

Correct, any gas burning appliance/HVAC. Some people put one in the garage as well if they park in it but you should never warm up a car in a garage, you should quickly move the car out and let it warm up outside.

Check local codes, some towns require them in the kitchen regardless of your appliance (if you are buying a new house)

I have a heat pump with oil as a backup on the extremely cold days. If the power would go out and the heat stops running I guess it wouldn't matter if this didn't have any power as well, correct?

The heat pump (glorified AC) wouldn't be a concern with CO, though, would it?

The concern would (possibly) be if the oil backup furnace is on. Though that's not nearly as high of a concern as if you had a natural gas system.

Regardless, this has a battery backup so it should last for quite a while even if the power is out. I'm guessing that would last for many days in a power outage.

I have all electric heat in my house but have a CO detector for two reasons:

1. One of my 10 yo vehicles has remote start. Just in case protection

2. In case of a blackout I have an indoor-safe propane Mr Heater and a generator

I have one of the infinity whot water heaters that is gas powered and outside the house. The AC unit has supplemental heat for when it gets extra cold. Sounds like I should get one, right?

Is the supplemental heat electric?

If the only sources of gas are outside the home I wouldn't worry about it. If the source is gas or oil and inside the house I'd absolutely have one of these. Eg, of the backup heat source is a gas furnace air ducted to each zone I'd absolutely have one of these in each occupied space. As someone else mentioned, a combo smoke/CO detector might be prudent.

FWIW a CO detector (not this brand) saved my life when my furnace vent got blocked.
