At $200 vs. $300 for the 10th gen, this is probably a better deal. 3 and 4GB of RAM is going to lead to lots of page refreshing when switching between browser tabs or between the browser and another app. A lot of sites that have continuous scrolling or lots of embedded media and javascript will refresh even when not in the background. This gets incredibly annoying. Chrome is almost unusable with 3GB and javascript on. Safari handles it better.
USB-C on the 10th gen is limited to the same data transfer rate as lightning, but you can play videos directly off of a usb c thumb and a player like VLC. The 9th gen needs the camera adapter and the adapter needs to be connected to a charger to use most non-lightning thumb drives and playing media off of a lightning drive is much less straightforward. The M1 Air at $400 is going to hold up a lot longer with double the RAM of the 10th gen and it has a full 10Gbps usb 3.2 interface, so transferring files to and from an external drive can be up to 30 times faster. The matching keyboard folio is dirt cheap used and locks into position, so it's a much more stable stand than the 10th gen's kickstand and floppy Magic Keyboard. It's also compatible with the ipad pro Magic Keyboard, which has a similar stability advantage and allows you to connect a charger and a usb device simultaneously without needing a hub. This is really nice when you need to charge and use wired headphones. On that note, Apple's usb-c headphone adapter is really quite good and is substantially better than the lightning adapter. It has enough power to drive my 250 ohm DT770s to reasonable listening levels, where the lightning adapter can't.
You'll also get 2-3 years more major OS updates with the M1 vs. the 9th gen. It's hard to tell with the 10th gen. It may get dropped sooner than the M1 due to its RAM limitations. The 6th gen with 2GB is getting dropped in 18 while devices with the same CPU and 3GB are getting the update.

You get a lot more for the $50 upgrade to the 10th gen.

10.9 inch screen vs 10.2
Usb-c native
12mp 4k camera vs 8mp 1080p
Surround sound speakers
WiFi 6 vs WiFi 5
Supports new gen Apple Pencil and magic folio.
And of course better processor.

https://www.apple.com/ipad/compar...ad-9th-gen

People aren't just on slickdeals for deals but also knowledge sharing and recommendations. Lots of people are on the fence between the models. If I can get 3 more years out of the 10th gen vs 9th gen I say it's well worth the $50.

The 9th gen is from 2021. But obviously get what works with your lifestyle. This is still an awesome price but I'm hoping the 10th gen gets a better price for a little more $$

USB-C vs lightning port is the main reason I would want a newer iOS device... Just one less cable to carry around

Who cares about serial number I can go to the store and buy iPads all day and get the serial number and take them back. It's $150 iPad I don't care about no warranty
You must care, since you deleted your $150 Target receipt attachment.

If you're talking about major iOS versions, you can only guess as there's no way to know this far out.

You'll find out at WWDC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wor...Conference [wikipedia.org]) which is every year. On the opening day keynote, they'll talk about the next major iOS/iPad version and they'll say what's supported. Near the bottom of https://www.apple.com/ipados/ipados-18-preview/ lists what iPadOS 18 can run on.

https://everyi.com/by-capability/...-ipad.html [everyi.com] is helpful.

5th gen https://everymac.com/systems/appl...specs.html [everymac.com] came out in 2017 and is stuck on iPadOS 16.
6th gen https://everymac.com/systems/appl...specs.html [everymac.com] came out 2018 and is stuck on 17.
7th gen https://everymac.com/systems/appl...specs.html [everymac.com] can go to 18.

9th gen https://everymac.com/systems/appl...specs.html [everymac.com] came out in Sept 2021.

Apple only backports a subset of security fixes (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201222) to old iOS/iPadOS versions. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2...y-patched/ [arstechnica.com] confirms what I've observed. (I work on iOS/iPadOS software for a living and for my personal iDevices, I keep them reasonably up to date.)
That's very helpful. Thank you!

Sounds like it's getting closer to EOL. First drop support for newer iOS versions, then slowly app stops being compatible.

is there a substantial difference between this vs getting a 10th gen or even m1? the uses are just for watching videos and occasionally facetime
Its like buying an iPad 3 with the old 40 pin vs iPad 4 with lighting port.

80% the same except for charging port and slightly faster chipset.

iPad 9 pairs nicely with iPhone SE or iPhone with old lighting.

M1 iPad, iPad 10 pairs nicely with USBC iPhone

To be honest iPad 9 64gb is worth
2024- $150 to $200
2023- $230-$250
2022- $250
2021-$320

The best deal would be 256gb iPad 9 for $350 or 128gb M1 iPad $450.

I can tell you with certainty that the EOL for this iPad is closer now than it's ever been before.

Is this iPadOS15 or 17? Target website lists it as iPadOS17…is that incorrect?

Also, what's the difference between this at target and the one at Costco? It's the same price though for $200

This iPad is already in EOL. All specs are behind the current standard at least one generation. Forget about the hot AI features, the screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, battery charging, data port are out of date in comparison to the recent technology. It is the same age as iPhone 11.

Question: Is this 9th generation iPad usable today, in August 2024?

Or is it on the verge of being outdated? Or, is it already outdated?

If someone would like to reply and share some useful feedback about this, it would be appreciated.

gee, most slick dealers do research on product they are thinking of buying. I watched youtube videos made in 2024 on this product, I read amazon, best buy, target user reviews from 2024 (current... or newest reviews first). These ipad 9th gen threads with 199 price have super high thumbs up with hundred thousand views!

This device year is 2021 , and it takes current IOS, and gets updated every couple of weeks with latest bug fixes, etc.

This is different type of product than smartphone or android stuff, ... so my "friendly" advice is research this product using current 2024 data and don't go buy anything anyone on slickdeals says without doing your own research. Lots of great people on Slickdeals but also not so nice people. We live on earth and some cities or parts of town are not the safest places to be, same with slick deal stuff. Smilie
Since I only spent 199 dollars on brand new ipad, in a few years I can also buy another newer one on super sales for another 199 dollars. Beats spending tons more on IPAD that in a few years newer one will be out that people rave about , in 2026 all the "new" ipads from 2024 will be considered OLD.

I mean, yes, but for many people, everything out there is type C now. Phone, laptop, headphones, etc. adapters are just something to lose while the 10th gen just plugs right in.

I would also note that we have seen the 10th gen for just $50 more. You get a whole lot more there. Obviously, if you don't care then of course it doesn't matter and nothing is wrong with that, but for many people, Type C native is the expectation.
When/where was the 10th gen only $50 more? I'm wondering if I should buy the 9th now or hold on until Black Friday and look for a 10th at a deal price, but the lowest I've seen it is 299.
