Oh good, I thought it was just happening to me. I made a list called "Google farkups" in regards to its attempt at speech to text AI, here we go:

#1
• TV is streaming a soccer game
• me to speaker in bathroom: "hey google, can I (loses train of thought)...cancel"
• GA: "okay, stopping living room TV"
• me to speaker in bathroom: "hey google, resume living room TV"
• "nothing's playing right now"

#2
• on hub in kitchen, streaming BBC radio station, clicks on "home group" button to play on all speakers
• it starts playing on the other speakers for a second and then pauses forcing me to have to click play (and it's not a buffering issue, I've patiently waited to test this out)

#3
• me to any speaker: "hey google, play SONG NAME on home group"
• GA: "I'm sorry, I can't find a home group (yet I can click on it on my nest hub screen just fine and it'll play to the home group)"

#4
• me to any speaker: "hey google, play SONG NAME"
• *song starts playing*
• hey google, play on my home group
• GA: "I'm sorry, something went wrong"

#5
• "hey google, turn off my living room light"
• GA: "I'm sorry, it looks like that device isn't available right now"
• I immediately say the same thing again and it turns off

#6
• "hey google, please play (current song) on home group"
• "Sorry, I can't find a home group. Please make sure that device is turned on and connected to the internet."

#7
• "hey google, set living room light to 100%"
• sets it to last setting which was 30%
• one time I said 100% again and it still set it at the last 30% setting, then on the third time it changed it (this has happened twice now)

So yeah, I'm really not a huge advocate anymore, I feel like in the last year or two shit has been going backwards with their AI shit.

I have a pair of these. When they work, they're great. The problem is, they don't always work properly. Really just another product in the Google abandonment graveyard.

$10 less per speaker than I paid in 2021. But with how unreliable and buggy these products have become, there is no way I'm giving google more of my hard earned money.

If you are doing it via the app to a single speaker yes you will be.

Like others have said it's super hit or miss besides that when it comes to groups or voice commands.

My favorite use for them now is connecting one to a power stop when I'm having a grill out and just playing Spotify.

I think the speakers work well, I just hate that Google seems to be stripping features from the speakers all the time. Just seems really backwards 🤷🏿 ♂️

Was happy to sell mine

Sounded good in a stereo pair but they were inconsistent and I spent too much time trying to work with them and get normal consistent functionality

That's all I was doing ... but even that was hit or miss on recognizing playlists, etc

I have all 4 assistants in different devices at my house, more microphones then 1984 could have ever predicted. I'm confident every word I speak is being analyzed by AI at the NSA. between Alexa, Siri, Google, and Bixby, sometimes I get them mixed up, like I do with my kids and call them by the wrong name. Each assistant has their pros and cons, I like how Alexa seems to be able to answer more general questions then Google or Siri, and will put up info on the screen on the echo show. I like how Google can control YouTube on my televisions, and I like how Siri works with my HomeKit devices and being able to make phone calls from my cell phone. They all have some redundant functionality, on my Samsung TV I switched to Bixby instead of Alexa because I've already got 2 Alexa enabled devices in that room. Only problem with having so many smart assistants and speakers is sometimes the far field mics pick up the voice commands from the wrong device - ie, I while in my living room I ask Alexa about the weather and the Echo Flex in my bathroom will answer for some reason. It would be nice to have a device that could be configured for any assistant. One device that could handle Siri, Alexa, Google, or even Bixby… maybe an open standard, but I guess that will never happen..

But I digress- Google is just ok. I have a couple of them puck looking speakers I don't even use anymore, and the Nest Hubs sit largely unused for the most part. Currently the one in my office is buried under a mountain of paperwork.

I have 10 google speakers , mixed , from the original mini's to the homes, max and 2 of these google audios.

I was having problems with the
Groupings disappearing from Spotify on my iPhone
( same on my pixel 7 )

After a lot of trouble shooting , I found if I rebooted the MAX, the groups would come back to Spotify
( even when the groups were missing in Spotify , I could issue voice commands to play on the groups )

I had to do the MAX reboots 1-2 times per week for almost a year
Interesting enough , everything has been completely fine for about 2-months as of today

I'm not sure if an update was pushed out

My home WiFi is UniFi access points , hard wired to UniFi switch and router

I got two of these in a recent deal. Sound quality is decent in a pair but I had so many problems with ghost pairs. Eventually had to install a super old version of the Google home app on bluestacks as that version had the ability to delete the ghost pairs. Have babied the home setup ever since but it's still a toss up whether music plays on one or both speakers when I ask my display hub to play on the pair (the pair name is very different to the individual names). Couldn't really recommend unless you enjoy faffing around with cheap tech

Wait until Black Friday; the speakers will probably drop in price even more. I bought two for around $50 last year. You don't need to use Chromecast functionality; you can use AirPlay through AirConnect and Raspberry Pi. Google Home is not effective; I stopped using it a long time ago. I'm really hoping the price will go down, as I plan to get two more. The quality is decent. Also, using AirConnect on Raspberry Pi, you can apparently stream lossless quality music to these speakers. Yes, I know you probably won't notice a difference, but this can be a good setup, especially if you don't have enough space. I also dislike Chromecast functionality and talking to it; mine are always muted. AirConnect supports AirPlay 1 not 2. 2 compresses music on your iOS device even if you change Apple Music quality to lossless.

So. While I would agree that sometimes the voice commands seem a little "off" I think a lot of issues people have may have to do with WiFi reliability. Years ago we were having issues with our original google speakers. I troubleshot it a TON and finally found out that a poor router can cause issues with these sorts of devices as they can have weak radios or can be at odd corners of the house. I ended up getting a ubiquiti AP and turning off the WiFi in my router and connecting that. Solved 99% of the issues I had with the googles. Eventually upgraded my WiFi to all ubiquiti stuff but for other reasons.
I especially recommend this to the people who are complaining about issues with speaker pairs or groups. Ever since I upgraded my WiFi I've had no issues.

I haven't had any failures in 2 I have had for a long time. Way better sound than a mini also. Like everything says though, things are so buggy now. Playing on one speaker usually works if another speaker can't hear, lol. Groups rarely work right and sometimes even play in a different speaker not even in the group.

This is so relatable. I stopped using them almost entirely (I own 3), because they constantly disconnect from each other, they cant hear me, and half the time they do the wrong thing or get confused and do the opposite of what I asked. It's so infuriating lol
