I don't think that's accurate unless you're really on the other side of the bias - he was amazing in Ken Burns civil war and even ta neitsi Coates is apparently not as harsh as your judgment:

I've read all three volumes (real books) at least twice. 3,000 pages of Civil War goodness. Probably one of the best recounts of the era ... possibly even better than Bruce Catton's.

You beat me to it. Weird that anyone looks at consensus as being anything other than an ivory tower love in.

Catton was just way too dry for me to read. I enjoyed Foote a lot more.

by the way, Grover Gardner is one of the best audiobook narrators I've ever listened to. I often sort by narrator when choosing my next title atAudible, and he is one of my go to narrators along with Wanda McCadden.
Couldn't agree more. Probably my favorite narrator for non-fiction.
I'm half way through Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, and Gardner's delivery is fantastic.

Is there a good way to buy from Chirp and then listen through Audible?

Robert E Lee never surrendered. Only reason he handed his sword over to Gen. Grant was to get it cleaned & polished.
Yeah right, kinda like we don't admit that the US LOST the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan…. We just "pulled out" lol. Too many people in the US are not truthful (nor accountable) when it come to our American history..That being said, unless you are talking about higher sought material, most public libraries have more than enough pieces for most people.

Do the real books contain many maps or other images that would be missed listening to the audio book? Would expect a military history to include lots of maps. Thanks in advance.

It's a shame that the audiobooks weren't narrated by Shelby himself, his voice is honestly mesmerizing.

Shelby Foote is a disaster as a 'historian', with no actual training he repeats several pernicious myths of the South and Slavery, particularly the racist Lost Cause myth. His work should be avoided.
Thank you. Saved me the money. Definitely do not want to give clowns money, however little.

That's true.

I routinely get my car work done at burger king and get my annual health checkup at the pet store.

Totally makes sense that we shouldn't trust people that have experience in their field. It's best to get advice from a completely non related source.

I'm with you.

I did some research a while ago and Battle Cry for Freedom came up as the best text on the Civil War.

Great book.

Do you think Russia will just pull out of Ukraine like the did in East Germany & those other places like during the cold war?

It's unfortunate you're being down voted -- your summation is reflective of the mainstream consensus in academia. Foote was a gifted storyteller, but a historian he was not.
Is this book another attempt to minimize the fact that the South fought to own people as property? Or is there another reason why his work isn't looked upon positively? I was thinking of grabbing this for someone as a gift (history buff) but not if is another attempt to whitewash history.
