Not true across the board. Here in Charlotte, NC, Duke Power has these sales but they are never free or even close to $50 but do have $50 or $75 off. They do not have to install it and they simply ship you the device at discounted rates. They do not control it.

If you let them control it, they give you an additional $75 one time off your power bill.

check your local power company websites, I can get this for under $50 through mine... sometimes they even have it free.

The problem with these things is that they are small. Too small for me. I must put my glasses on to do anything with them. And the settings is inconvenient, I must spin the dial to find a setting screen and there are very many setting screens. If I go fast then I can miss seeing the setting. For the WiFi password, I have a long one and it is especially difficult to enter the password with the tiny display, we must spin the dial to get a character and we must switch among upper case and lower case and I think numbers are a third category. Entering a secure password is a big pain.

In California PG&E installed a Nest for free. I have low income.

You say they do not control it then you say if they control it. A little bit of a contradiction.

I keep reading about WiFi chips going out and the software being a pain.
I think a WiFi chip went bad on me, about 2 years after it was installed. I already had a new thermostat that I had not used therefore I replaced the Nest with the other one.

I got one for free from my power company and installed myself. They offer the option to give them access to control it during peak hours in exchange for a yearly check (in my case for $25, which was not worth it to me), but even then you can change it whenever you want even during those peak hours. However, opting in was not a requirement for receiving the free device. Just FYI.
I did not see how to override it during energy rushes. I did not try real hard but if it is possible to override then it is not obvious.

Can anyone tell me if these are reliable or better than an EcoBee? I keep reading about WiFi chips going out and the software being a pain. I'm afraid to install it and potentially lose out on $150, especially when people seem happier with an EcoBee.
I've had 2 Nests go out on me, next time the 3rd one breaks I'm going with EcoBee ...

In Houston store, the nest+ 2x sensor version is also on clearance $75.

It's also eligible for $50 centerpoint coupon.

Energy rush isn't auto enrolled, you have to opt in

How do we use the centerpoint coupon? I'm in Houston and would like to do it

All I've had to do to override is change the temperature either manually on the thermostat or in the app. That's all. It's never given me any issues.

I see that the Republic of Caalifornia has low comprehension issues too. I would recommend you re-read my post which you quoted. Big Grin

I see no problem with my statement. Perhaps what you meant to say is that they do not control it by default but we can let them control it. I read with precision, perhaps greater precision than you are accustomed to.

To answer questions regarding compatibility with current thermostat wiring, do google nest compatibility search and fill in required fields

I never liked the Nest because it did not seem to really "learn" your schedule. It is always on and off almost randomly and there is no manual way to use it. I switched to the Ecobee at my house and my rental properties.

That did not work for me.
