If you are willing to do the work, there's a few youtube videos showing how you can "hack" the CO2 cartridges and refill them using dry ice that you can purchase from a grocery store. I had a difficult time removing the brass fitting from the tank. But once I used a monkey wrench to hold the tank, it was very easy to loosen the brass fitting with a crescent wrench. Only costs me about $7 to fill up 4 tanks worth of CO2. See the video below for more details.

I was going to purchase one of these soda makers. ($100~$150)
It turns out the CO₂ cartridge cost $50+
If you exchange the empty one when buying a new one it's about $16

I get a 20# tank (with the syphon tube) for $55. I can refill about 17-19 Soda stream canisters with it. All you need is a transfer (search Cylinder Refill Adapter Hose - CO2 Refill Adapter Fill Station Connector Kit) and a scale. Note if you get one of the terra (pink) style ones you will need an adapter just for the refilling.I freeze the tank for about and hour and slowly open the fill valve as there is a check valve to keep the refills from happening. I fill it around 350-375 grams.

It takes a few times to get the hang of how much to open the valve before going full throttle on it.

When I get to around 13 cans I have to do this several times 3-4 before being able to fully refill the cylinder.

I've refilled around 36 of these so far. That's $540 if paying at the store vs $110 for the two tanks, 35 for the adapter and $10 for the scale. Once you buy a tank you swap it and that initial cost is around $130-150.

Hope this helps.

I get pelletized dry ice for $1.50 a lb. It takes 14oz. So so so cheap to refill.

Yeah I might have to do that to my 20lb if I can find somewhere to get the dry ice from

Check out Simpli Soda, they also have an app. 12.99 per cylinder to exchange. Mail your old back with the prepaid return label. Wished I thought of this, could have been a millionaire.

They absolutely do not! I buy refill cylinders for $27 for 2 shipped from a company called SimpliSoda (fully compatible with soda stream). It's awesome and cheaper than from soda stream directly.

Love simplisoda but I doubt they're millionaires yet. Try their customer support. It's really personal and they've told me they're a small business in lake mills WI. Hope their business takes off and I'll keep buying from them as long as they'll have me. Really convenient.

It's just syrup, but they won't ship to Hawaii. Lame. "This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location. Please choose a different delivery location."

Why not just buy an adapter hose to hook the Sodastream directly to a 20lb CO2 tank? That's what I did. The adapter hose is around $40. You can go to either a hardware store or a welding supply store for CO2 tanks, I think they are about $75 for a 20lb. Then every 4-6 months I exchange it for $30. It's very easy to do .

That's really good to know! Do they also sell machines or just the CO2? Anything to avoid buying from Sodastream...

Yeah, I bought a $40 adapter hose, a $50 5lb Vevor tank off Amazon (you're going to swap it anyway, who cares), and now I just swap the tank for ~$20 and I don't have to change out the tiny 14oz cylinders all the time and pay way too much. The $90 investment pays back in a few months pretty easily for me.

Or skip the special tanks and buy a tank like all the restaurants use. Get a hose, adapter from amazon and just fill 2ltr bottles and carbonate them. You can buy the tanks on amazon but special retailers have better deals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5DYFk2aSz8 is a youtube site showing how to do it. Can be be done cheaper than he said.. Pay US prices Smilie.

I've been buying the diet syrups for a while. For some reason their diet cola tastes off but others are pretty good. Ginger ale is my favorite and useful for mule type summer cocktails.
