It really depends what your needs are. If you only need a few sockets and the Dewalt set has everything you need, this is a good deal.

Having both sets I can say the Dewalt is better quality and is slightly heavier.
HF 19mm: 212.5g
Dewalt 19mm: 216.5g

Personally, I would lean more towards the HF set since it has more sockets.

How is this one compare to a few harbor freight sets? Went as low as $16.99.

Not sure why you're down voted. If you have a harbor freight near you I would go with them. If a socket breaks you walk in the store and they'll replace free of charge

That's great, but how many projects would I want to stop cold and drive to the nearest HF, assuming business hours?

For a few bucks more, i'd pay for extra piece of mind and not be stuck with a half disassembled car.

DeWalt set uses the stronger chrome molly vs chrome vanadium of HF...though a well made chrome vanadium can outform molly sometimes if you watch project farm enough. Also, DeWalt prints the socket size on the side - though that's debateful which you prefer. The inside tray on the DeWalt can be removed and placed in a tool tray if you have one or kept in the case for organization. Does the HF comes with a case?

+1. The HF has 6 more sockets (10mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, 27mm, 30mm, 32mm, missing 20mm from DeWalt) is on sale for $16.99 if you have ITC (expires 9/29). It looks like it is priced at $20 infrequently (12-17-2021, 03-08-2022, 06-03-2022, 06-02-2023, 10-13-2023 per hfpricetracker) with occasional coupons sprinkled throughout.

The second link is 12-point, and unfortunately, had a coupon that just expired on the August 15th, 2024.

There's also the Pittsburgh Pro (has gone as low as 24.99 but not too frequently) that has 10-pc (11,12,13,14,15,17,19,21,22,24): https://www.harborfreight.com/12-...67915.html

I will mention the case though since in my experience HF sockets just come with a little plastic packaging that isn't reusable.

Also, I think the HF cheaper sets (the Pittsburgh brand) use chrome vanadium while the Pittsburgh Pros' are chrome molly and also with laser etching. Don't think it comes with a case. Probably the Pittsburgh Pro is a more apt comparison which is sold at $32.99 and goes to $24.99 very occasionally (02-04-2023, 07-27-2024).

EDIT:

PITTSBURGH 1/2 in. Drive Impact Deep Socket Set, 13-Piece (12-point) on sale for $20 w/ coupon 77989544 (both SAE and metric)

Also, from ICON (their Snap-on competitor), ICON 3/8 in. Drive Professional Deep Impact Socket Set, 12-Piece (both SAE and Metric, NOTE 3/8in DRIVE) for $40 with case https://www.harborfreight.com/38-..._id=182930

Reasons to buy the DeWalt set
  • The usefulness of the included case. (Clasps & super thin inner tray are prone to breakage but flimsy case still much better than no case.)
  • The 7 sockets cover the range of sizes you will need.
Reasons to buy the Harbor Freight set
  • The 13 sockets provides a more complete range of sizes.
  • You plan on breaking sockets & are close enough to a HF store that the warranty is appealing.
Invalid reasons to buy the DeWalt set
  • You think the DeWalt name means they are higher quality. (The Dewalt sockets are the same junk ones you would get from other Stanley Black & Decker brands i.e. Craftsman just with a brand that appeals to your demographic lasered on. Their quality is similar to the Pittsburgh ones from Harbor Freight.)
  • The laser labels are easier to read. (If you actually use your tools they rub off fairly quickly.)

Probably only worth if you're a real mechanic.
