Let be clear on their unlocking policy. There is 365 days waiting time, and also the phone should have service for 180 days within 365 days. This is per my recent conversation with their customer service agent.
Please remember that their unlock policy criteria does not specify automatic unlock regardless of the service time.

You're missing the point here. 99% of us only want to pay $125 1x to get the phone. You want to pay $70 a month for 2 years. Not us😀

Its asking for an 8 digit pin when I try to login for the first time after i activate. I don't remember creating a pin. When I click forgot Account PIN nothing happens.
u need to call them. they will send a code to your phone and then reset the pin.

A few days after online activation call Metro port dept to manually complete the GV port sooner (by default they take 1mo to finish port)

Once your old GV number is fully ported over and out of Google then you can use that old GV number (now Metro number) to claim a new GV number

Another option if you don't want to call is to let your 1mo Metro service exp -- eventually you'll get an email from GV saying your number ported away (about 1mo after activation). After that you can login to Metro and they'll have an option for a free 72hr service extension during your 2nd mo (no need to pay) -- your service will be working again and your number will be fully ported so you can now use that number to claim another GV number
Could you please provide more details on this service extension? Once the metro contract expires, one can't login to Metro account as there is no way to receive the authentication SMS code. How do you login to the Metro account?

The same way (you still get Metro system texts) -- you can access online account for 1mo after service ends before it gets deleted completely

Thank you. This is brilliant. I called metro today and the rep told me the status indicated my G voice number being stuck. He attempted to contact Google during our call but was told the department at gvoice responsible for releasing numbers won't be available until next Monday to help complete the port. I was initially wanting to get a second iPhone from metro and trade in prior to the Apple event next Monday, in case trade in values drops. Will have to decide today if I just trade this one in and let the account expire on its own or wait. Thanks for your help!

I don't expect the BB trade-in value to come back, but has anyone bothered to ask Metro if the free Samsung A9+ tablet (+$20 service) will be back anytime soon?

The iphone12 for $125 you can't use for a year is an just okay deal. They won't be worth much more than that after a year probably anyway. Real deal was using it as BB Pixel 9 trade-in (dead now) and the free ($20) Samsung tablet (also dead now). Current better deal than the $125 i12 is buying a 2nd (or 3rd?) for another $85 with additional port-in ($49 + $35 service)
Can still trade it in to Apple for $170 GC (or $200 towards iphone 15). Can also try an RSim to unlock (temporarily??) the i12, but that's hit and miss. Search... lots of questions and some answers about the RSim.
How is buying another/2nd a better deal?
So i'll be keeping both in a closet for 1 year?

I'm just looking for use this gadget that i paid almost 200 for, besides putting in drawer. Did I make a mistake? bec the trade in for pixel is gone

Yes you did make a mistake. You made the most common slickdeals mistake. buy now worry about what you are going to use it for later. hahaha. Okay joking aside. You can still get value for it trading it in. So it isn't a mistake the elevated value trade in deals happen all the time. you could save it for the next Galaxy phone launch or maybe the iphone 16 launch. you can look into get an mksd or an rsim(couldn't get this to work myself but it is something to try)

eh?? Buying a second for $85 is better than buying the first for $125 because it's $40 cheaper. (or effectively 2 for $210 then.) (Oh, and how did you end up paying almost 200 for it when the deal was for ~$125?)
Anyway, like I said, it's still not a bad deal at $125. They can still be traded in to Apple for more GC value than we're buying them for. Just not nearly as good as it was at the beginning with the other options were available.
I bought mine a week and a half ago, planning to buy a second and a couple of the Samsung tablets... only to be disappointed the tablet offer ended. Might try and buy a 3rd now instead (if I can). (EDIT: Had mentioned getting a cheaper SE also, but removed as they're not actually available online.)

I bought it too late for the BestBuy deal too. No biggie. The goal at this point is to have 1-2 iPhones handy to use as a trade in when the next elevated trade-in value deal comes up, which is a gamble I am willing to play.

My niece currently has an iPhone 11 on Metro. Can I port a Google Voice number over just to get the new phone and then use her existing SIM card to put on this new iPhone 12 and let the new line cancel itself?

so basically for trade ins. where value trade in is 200-500, or whatever, that's what this is for.
i just want to make sure there's no metro deal somewhere, where I can use it while waiting for unlock

OK, so I ordered one.
It's arriving Monday.

I will assume everyone here will just cancel Metro after 1 month. If this can not be unlocked free for 12 months, a lot will be just shoving this phone in a drawer for months.

Can the rest share with me, what else beside that I can use this phone for? Because I can not put my Tmo sim in it either, won't work.
Did you disable the esim with the Metro line on it and then try the t-Mobile sim?
