This review on the Walmart website from January says they're CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum):

"Not actually 4 Gauge, not actually copper.
These jumper cables are closer to 6 gauge and are actually CCA, basically a copper coated aluminum. this does not perform as well as 100% copper. this means if you reach the current and amperage limit of real copper, these jumper cables would've melted and burnt by then. also, these were missing one of the leads."

thanks for posting. I am right there with you. I couldn't find the info either. Now I have to research if CCA is a reasonable alternative. Corporate profits of elemental substitutions are eating into my life. Mfgs should be forced to label this type of thing clearly on their products.

I couldn't find anywhere that specifies what kind of metal it is. 4 gauge what? I assume it's aluminum?

Likely copper clad aluminum. Not much better but it's 4awg. Should be fine.

It's fine for virtually every passenger vehicle made today.

I can attest this is actually true. I had these cables and they literally melted and began smoking when I attempted to use them to jump my minivan. My wife said "what's smoking" and I had to run and grab some gloves to remove them from the cars they were blistering hot. BUYER BEWARE!!!

It's almost impossible to find jumper cables on Amazon or Walmart that are pure copper. Find an old pair on FBM or CL and you may get lucky. Copper prices have been through the roof and CCA is the norm for these, speaker wires and even in wall electrical wire.

The portable and rechargeable jumper packs that are only a little more money work better and are far safer and easier to use.

Not really. Their are a few that are solid copper cables on amazon. Made in china though and about 60-70 bucks. .Deka / east penn cables are over 100 on amazon but one has to look up the cables to make sure they are solid copper and not clad coat.

I was wondering who still uses jumper cables. I started using the battery packs 10 years ago, and they've been great.

Having said that, I could see leaving a pair of cables in the car in case the pack goes dead and another car is around, but I've used my battery pack to jump other people's car too, and am guessing someone else might have a battery pack too. The battery packs are a LOT more convenient.

i strongly recommend this item.
4 gauge! The cables are very above normal in quality. Also, you may have the new small battery chargers you can hold in your hand, but they can fail. it is great to have the old school jump cables on stand by.,,,,and 4 gauge tow truck strength! not weaker 6,8 or 10 gauge. even if you paid full price of $40.

Sounds more like user error.

I have this same set and have jumped multiple cars without issue.

Using jump packs you're also sidestepping any risk of charging system damage on the car providing the jump. Modern charging systems can easily be damaged by the voltage surge backfeeding from the "dead" car when it starts. Best practice when using jumper cables is to stop the boosting vehicle's engine prior to attempting to start the dead vehicle.

Good deal on these jumper cables. Thanks for posting, OP.

This is a great price, even for CCA. pure copper 6 gauge equivalent will cost you several times more
