I replayed Thief Gold a few years ago, after having played it on release, and it completely held up. Elegantly simple game mechanics, with great level design and audio. It's just really fun to explore and feel like you've eventually mastered a level. (I played through shamelessly save scumming, trying to ghost levels) People say Thief II is the best but I haven't gotten to it yet.

These are some of the most memorable games you will ever play. The Thief universe and lore are in a class of their own, there's nothing like it. The cut scenes are these haunting pictures narrated with world class voice acting. It's one of the few games where I just stop and listen to the NPC's background dialogue. It's a completely enthralling experience, and are some of the best stealth games ever made. The Thief atmosphere is indomitable. A playful but mysterious little game.

I'm glad you mention the lore. I feel it's underrated.

I played these games around 2014 and loved them. Thief one has some scary (horror) levels and thief 3 had one too. I haven't played thief 4.

Thief is one of my most favorite games of all time. And this is from someone who has played thousands of games in their almost 60 year life!

Great game. But the graphics are ancient. Watch YT video to see if you can live with that. Gameplay is fantastic but the way it looks... is a challenge these days.

I tried to replay it recently and... I just couldn't. I'm not into graphics all that much (still play heroes 2 and warcraft 2 regularly) but it was a bit too much.

Thief game series is my all time favorite, the game feel is very unique and I have played computer games for about 30 years. Thanks to the fan community you can still get new maps to this day https://www.thedarkmod.com/missions/ And they even have texture updates you can download

These are classics. Except the last one. Skip that one entirely.

There are patches to update the graphics.

The latest thief is good. Graphics don't feel too old, like Arkham knight.

Just my opinion, one of the best and most immersive PC game franchises out there and it still holds up today. The original graphics engine of 1&2 (Thief: The Dark Project (now called Gold)/ Thief II: The Metal Age) are clearly dated as they were first released in 1998/2000. The 3rd installment (Deadly Shadows) which is about 20 years old now had a graphics engine update that holds its own and Thief "4" which was a total departure from the series with different game play and characters is a much better update graphics wise but the play isn't as fun as the more open world'ed Thief 1 and 2.

Luckily Thief has a pretty dedicated fan base and new levels are created and modern HD/updated texture packs are available to refresh the look of the games. Additionally, if you can imagine this, a couple of dedicated fans spend the past 7 years creating an entirely new Thief called "The Dark Parade" which is based on the Thief II: Metal Age game/engine featuring 10 brand new *huge* mission levels with a very emmersive story worth of "Thief".

Clearly I am biased because I absolutely love this game series and probably do a full run through of all of them at least once every couple of years. However, if you're into that genre of stealth with a great main character (Garrett) and insanely emmersive environment I can't recommend these enough.

If you do end up taking the plunge - I would also recommend looking up Thief The Circle fan website where you can find the above mentioned fan missions, unofficial patches and upgrades. These are all best installed/applied to fresh new installs of the games (so think ahead.)

Just a friendly reminder to check your Epic launcher to see if you already snagged this for free but never played it. Because that describes me.
