Absolutely barebones entry-level specs of 8gb ram and 256gb SSD (and I recall that Apple sometimes uses lesser quality chips in their entry-level machines so it's even worse performance).

This is 2024....these specs would have been slightly below-average *ten years ago*. Now it's just comical.

Ok ok ok, fine. I wouldn't recommend a new retail 64gb/8tb system to an average user (as it's overkill), just as I wouldn't recommend a 8gb/256gb system. Both are on the extremes, and require clearly articulated use cases.

Just because Apple *offers* that configuration, doesn't mean it's a *good* configuration.

There are more credible rumors that Apple will be going to 16GB of Ram as their base on the next round of releases of products with the M4 chip.

Rumors have been around for a while, but the rumors from 2 days ago came from credible resources based on what Apple has been testing. All testing versions were 16Gb or greater.

Not sure if it's for the MB Pro or MB Air since the testing versions were code named.

However. If they are moving to 16GB as base it is probably because they found it was needed to provide a better experience for Apple Intelligence features.

This is an everyday machine for a regular user. These specs are fine for this line of product.

Now 8GB on a "Pro"-labeled device? Ain't no way. Apple should be ashamed of themselves for releasing something with 8GB and calling it a device for professionals.

Um, no. No it's absolutely not. All joking aside, it MIGHT have been fine to say that a decade ago, but not anymore.

Spec comments are boring. This isn't the right computer for everyone, but for my wife it is the one. She likes the bigger screen, is a light user and will likely never have ram or storage issues. $200 more for a bigger screen is worth it. More money for unneeded ram and storage is not. It isn't the right computer for me, or maybe you, but it was and is for her. Could there be a better sale later or better entry level model coming soon, sure. But this is the lowest price on the computer that she has and is perfect for her. There is a legit argument for more ram for upcoming AI stuff, but she won't ever use that very often if ever. She needs web browsing, email, iMessage, bigger screen, photo management and we are a Mac/iPhone family. This one fits. We got it the first time it went on sale for more than this and have no regrets.

I see a Microcenter refurb deal for the 13.6 version. A similar deal in this 15 would be slick.

I have this computer in 16/512 and I get a message from Cleanmymac that the browser is causing me to run out of memory. I do have a good amount of tabs, but nothing ridiculous.

It's a great machine, but I wouldn't go for the 8gb.

Unix does not run out of memory in a normal fashion.
It may swap to and from the ssd ...given the speed of ssd I think most would never notice.
I made my living for 25 years publishing as well as creating video and podcast and short of working for nfl films all these machines do the job.

1000 for a net book....
yeah get a 200 dollar laptop if you going to get 8gb of ram and most of the 200 laptops you can at least upgrade the ram.

fuk apple remove all your 8gb laptops already its an insult.
8gb is only for ipads or tablets or chrome books now not this.

Lowest I've seen at a major retailer. In the market for one myself, figured I'd share.
