If your son is going to be using it for most normal types of college work (research, writing papers, online classes, a few dozen chrome tabs etc.), this is a great option.
If he is going to be doing graphic intense work (web/graphic design, advertising, engineering, etc.) or playing AAA games, then you will need something with a beefier graphics card.
Overall, the specs are great for the price and the components are the current generation. The build quality should be solid (with an aluminum chassis), and the 2 in 1 feature is nice.
Good luck to your son, and I hope he excels in whatever he is studying and makes you proud.

I saw this laptop at best buy, it is a good solid machine which I would recommend, especially for $549 price. There is nothing similar at this price range at the moment.
You may also consider Apple MB Air - lighter, good screen, battery lasts forever. Costco has the M2 for $799 at the moment. Really, doesn't mater which recent generation is, they all excel for a student or CS professional. If you son is studying computer science - Apple is fine, they pretty much just need it for coding, which is platform agnostic. Most importantly, the Air and MB Pro batteries can last a full day of classes.

Every teen isn't destructive. This has more to do with poor parenting from when they were small, to the present. Parents that don't teach kids to take care of possessions never learn. Just continue being idiots.
