Great unit.

No streaming though, you'll need to buy a streamer for something like Spotify.

The toslink input is noisy so use the analog (rca) inputs.
I'd just grab a wiim mini which can stream most things for under $80 when on sale, of course there are many suitable options.

290W Dynamic Power @ 2 Ohms......
OK......so that means 50~60W RMS @ 8 Ohm 2CH driven????

No. In ASR's rigorous bench test of the amp, it achieved 118W into 8 ohms (2CH driven). It did get a coveted "recommend" from Amir!

Measured - 118W @ 8 Ohms and 183W @ 4 Ohms.

I just use an Amazon Echo with 3.5mm to RCA adapter

Didn't see an option to apply the LABO2024 coupon at checkout. Do you have to sign in to see the coupon? Currently don't have an account yet with them.

I used the toslink on my s801 (same model more watts) and it's crystal clear. I'm running quad z4 and GR research NX Studios

The S801 has an upgraded DAC. The DAC on the S701 is noisy. The Phono stage on the S701 is also subpar with noise and doesn't hold the RIAA curve very well. The S701 is a great deal for the amp, but I would pair it with a quality DAC like the SMSL SU-1 and only use the S701 with its RCA inputs.

Howdy, the S701 toslink measures 'noisy'. You likely can't hear it but the RCA inputs measure much cleaner, this just means you typically won't gain anything trying to use the toslink input which usually are the quieter input in a given design.

Now if the device you are connecting to the S701 has a very dirty RCA/Analog out but a clean toslink out then you would go ahead with using the toslink input on the S701.

Ultimately this is all likely inaudible but kind of fun to know about for some folks.

This is generally a well measuring design with great power and ability to drive 2ohm loads will relative ease. Very much worth $500 in my view. The only issue is that it is to bad no silver for this $.

How would this work as external amp on a receiver from connecting the device perspective for home theater use? and the quality of the output?..

I got a receiver with pre-out that can connect to S701. But, s701 has no HT-pass, so i would be at inconvenience of correcting volumes on both amp and receiver?... is this correct if anyone knows better.

Googled a ton but I am not sure if I understood it correctly 😩 above is basically what I gathered so far.. and thank you in advance

Based on information from Yamaha, you can probably achieve what you want by connect the pre-out from the receiver to the CD input and use the Pure Direct mode. That would bypass all signal processing of the amp but that would leave the rest of the amp functions unused.

This is an integrated amplifier, which is a pre-amp and power amp in one unit.

What you're looking for is a power amp only.

Depending on your budget and power requirements, there are many of those available on the market that would suit your needs better than this Yamaha. This unit is meant for 2-channel stereo listening (i.e. music or 2-channel movie/TV listening)
