Before the "bugs!" comments come in, rice farms cannot guarantee 100% that their crops are free of weevils and their eggs. When buying any brand of rice from any retailer, you need to freeze the rice for a few days before storing it. This will kill the eggs to prevent them from hatching.
I get the 25lb bags of jasmine rice from Sam's Club. It's about 17ish dollars. Though, we go through a lot of rice being half Filipino family. If you don't do a lot of rice, good price. If you do, not so good as it's almost doubled.
I'm Asian and eat rice 24/7. Jasmine is generally considered the ideal rice, soft and fluffy. Long grain is supposedly healthier but a bit firmer and "drier". Basmati grains are thinner and is also fluffy but has a different mouthfeel than Jasmine. I only like it in Indian dishes like biryani but it's a no for me on plain basmati. Medium grain rice like calrose is similar to jasmine but not as highly regarded. I don't even know how to explain the difference because calrose is also soft and fluffy but it's like jasmine is a diamond and calrose is an emerald. They're both precious gems but a diamond is a diamond, y'know? And that concludes my rice TedTalk. Thanks for listening.

BS. I've *never* had bugs in my rice before and I constantly buy 15-20 lb bags.
Decent price if one must have 2lbs size (maybe for small studio apartment). If larger size is permitted, Iberia Jasmine 10lbs is actually a better deal per lb. I have been getting this for my picky parents (and myself) and it's comparable to the 20-50lbs bag purchased at Chinese grocery shops. Hope it helps!

More likely the rice warehouses rather than the farms.
At the local Wal-Mart, 5-pound Jasmine is $6 (already a better deal than this), and 20-pound is $17. The local Asian grocery store also has 25-pound Jasmine and above for around $1 per pound.
This is more expensive per pound than the usual everyday prices, and the one and only reason to get this is if you need a tiny 2-pound bag.
So why the hell is this a front-page deal? Since when does "regular price for product" qualify as a slick deal?
jasmine is my go-to rice for serving as a simple side to a dish. it feels like rice is really a preference thing? (outside of using specifics varietals for structural purposes, eg risotto or sushi)

Good analogy. I'm Asian too and will only eat Jasmine. However, there are only me and my hubby and a 25lbs bag from Sam's will last us over 6 months for $18ish.

Not everyone wants 50 lbs of rice at once.
