Don't get this phone the CPU on the exynos 1280 has two big and 6 small cores and caused a lot of stuttering. You want at least 4x4 recommend the a54, a35, or moto stylus 2024 5g. Take a look at the budget carriers for port in deals or swappa.com for used, don't ever pay retail for a Motorola too.

Is this still a viable phone? I have one I need to sell.
My daily is an A52 5G and it works perfectly fine. The phone is also a battery monster and the A53 should be ever so slightly better. I easily got 11+ hrs SOT during the first few years.
Accubattery says I'm down to 9:47 SOT now, but that's 3 years later so not too shabby.

I don't know how different the Exynos will be, but my A52 5G is a 2x6 with Qualcomm chips and it works quite well even after 3 years. Android has no issue with 2x6 arrangements.
My phone performs well with Samsung's stock OneUI or running Nova launcher.

Is it worth $100 at this point in time? Maybe if you are already locked into an ATT mvno it would make sense? A53 is my daily driver. Really solid phone. Battery capacity is excellent. It's survived one beating after another with a $12 rugged case from fleabay and a cheap glass screen cover. My trick was to never sign in to the phone via a Samsung account. So the phone isn't forced to run the additional Samsung bloatware associated with a Samsung account. No lag or stuttering but people are not stating when they experience this or what apps it supposedly stutters with. For maps navigation, email, music, watching videos on X YouTube Rumble Brighteon whatever, and fast food ordering apps it does great. Have yet to find a modern app it won't run since it's on Android 14. Tried the A54 and A52 and did not notice any major differences but a power user I am not. The OLED screen is really good and the camera on this one is darn decent too. Just not sure I'd pay 100 for it at this point in time if I lost mine and needed replacement, unless I was stuck under contract with ATT or ATT mvno that is.

Not a bad phone by any means, but no IP rating and an LCD screen vs the OLED for the A53 are things people should definitely be aware of when considering the A14 5g instead.

The a54 is free from total by Verizon if you port in a number, go through identity verification, and buy one month of service. Locked for 60 days. (SD ad says $55, but the price went down since then)

Decent phone. Using it now as my main phone.

Do you have any reports of real life performance instead of just spec sheets?

Do locked phones like this one work as media players? Or would they be able to prevent you from using it if you don't activate the plan?

Generally you can use it for everything except talking. I use other phones as specialized devices.

Another consideration if your in the market for a budget phone or a phone to tinker with is the OnePlus n200. Only 4gb ram, but snapdragon 480, 5g, large screen/battery. Got a refurb for about $75 and pretty happy with it. It has official lineageOS support to get it to android 14 as well.

In my case I got grandfathered into one of those "add a line free" promos with T-Mobile and this has been a great phone so far to tinker with. Even with only 4g ram I haven't run into stuttering.

For people that do, pro tip, open settings, about, tap on build version 10x to unlock developer options. Go into dev options and limit background tasks to 4 or less. Should breathe new life into old phones. Just note if you open a lot of apps some will go to sleep and stop running in the background with this setting on. For me, it's not enough to notice any usability difference but ymmv. This should work for any android device including android tv. Made my Hisense android tv snappy again.

It was cheaper a couple months back by signing up with an AT&T account. And then as soon as it shipped canceling the account. Proud to be an indian posted in another feed. But if you need a NEW spare phone without going thru the hoops. Then I guess it's okay

I think at this point not the best idea to go for a phone without eSIM support. A53 does not have eSIM.

A54 on the other hand is eSIM capable. Has both pSIM and eSIM.

Just be aware the A54 does NOT have a headphone jack.
That may be a deciding factor for some who are looking at this family of phones.
