Great deal for this computer. I have the 1040 and really like it. For those that don't bike longer distances and don't use many sensors, you may be able to get away with using your phone. For those who ride longer distances and/or use lots of sensors a bike computer is a huge upgrade. I have dual leg power, Di2 electronic shifting data, heart rate, glucose (I have type 1 diabetes and the Garmin can display my blood sugar value from my Dexcom), cadence, speed, etc all paired to my bike computer and the battery lasts 40+ hours on a single charge. Route navigation, crash detection, etc all excellent to have.

It's wild how many people take the time to comment how you don't need to buy something on a site about buying things....
It's not for you, then it's ok to move on!

Every single bike computer/accessory thread has the "Use your phone!! These are stupid" crowd.
Yeah, apparently from people who post but don't read...
Seems like 1/2 of SD posts for items over 100 bucks contains someone who insists that a lesser product is the way to go irrespective of quality.

Pair it with the Garmin Varia 715 for $299 for total $680 and you'll qualify for Amex offer $100 off $500 if you have it.

In this case I would like to hear from someone what you gain over just using a phone, because I just don't see it.
Just read all of the previous threads on bike computers.

One reason already cited in this thread is that battery life is longer on a bike computer.

I got a little more into road biking last summer and got the Edge 540 thinking I would be fine without the touch screen. After a few rides, I had enough double/missed presses that I returned it and tried the 840. I've been very happy with it. Screen has room for more info and is more readable than my watch (Forerunner 255). Watch easily pairs to give HR info.

Could I do most (or even all) those functions with my phone? Sure, but it's worth the money to me to have the separation. I'm not fighting notifications from other apps, the screen readability is better in direct sunlight than my phone's screen, the battery life is much better with screen/GPS on, no screen timeout settings to adjust for rides, etc. Mostly conveniences, but if I crash and break my bike computer, I can still use my phone to call for help.

I paid for $427 for mine and don't regret the purchase. I feel like I rarely see these go on major discount, so $380 seems like a solid deal unless it's eligible for the periodic 20% off REI codes (they often exclude GPS products).

guys u know u can download maps ahead of time on google maps right
it's like 10% map usage for me unless I'm following a route that was preset by the group ride I'm doing.

It probably depend on the rider and the route. If you are on a group ride with a complex route, you will want your gps screen running all the time for 2-4 hours. It will also be expose to the hot sun for multiple hours if attached to the bike. Phone might be damage/reboot from the heat , road vibration or a crash.

Also most of the routing apps like ridegps requires a paid subscription if you want offline routing. You would end up having to pay if you ride in the mountains or gravel trails.

It is just an extra toy if you are riding the same route every week or on a leisure exploration ride. In that case, phone prob do what you need fine.

People who don't ride for long distances don't understand the use for bike computers. Besides all of the sensors you can pair to the garmin and collect data, the main draw is having a dedicated bike computer that has a long battery life so you can save your phone's battery for when you need it, like calling someone in an emergency. This is a good deal for someone looking for a very full featured bike computer.

I'm going to post in every phone deal that you should just get a Garmin edge device instead of a phone now, just to troll them...
