Some Ultra 2s do have the sensor. For instance you can still get them new from Costco with the sensor for $100 more - https://www.costco.com/apple-watc...18736.html. If the MPN ends in LL/A it has it enabled, LW/A it doesnt.
Personally I just went the used route. Found one with the sensor and 100% battery in good condition and saved a couple hundred bucks
I have the Ultra 1 and absolutely love it, and I don't see a need to upgrade to a Ultra 2 or the new black one and I want to upgrade but there hasn't been much improvement or new features to justify the cost difference of a Ultra 1 vs Ultra 2 IMO. You are likely to get better deals especially if you are willing to go refurbished/renewed or used. (Ultra 1 Renewed is $499 on Amazon right now)
The main new features you get with Ultra 2 are:
Double tap gesture support
On-device Siri with health access
Precision finding for iPhone
Hardware differences on the Ultra 2 vs. 1
1000 extra nits brightness on the Ultra 2
S9 Chip (vs S8 on Ultra 1)
64gb storage (vs 32gb on Ultra 1)
Gen 2 Ultra Wide-band chip (gen 1 on Ultra 1)
72 hours of battery life in low power mode (vs 60 on Ultra 1)
Ultra 1 would have Blood Oxygen if made and not refurbished before 2024 (from my understanding)
Not a noticeable difference in any way to 99% of users.

Titanium in the new phone and watch. Hmm. World's toughest metal. Apple wants us to go to hand to hand fight with these weapons or what? Lol.. what about just giving the good old stainless steel or aluminum or plastic for a lesser price? Lol
I got in on that same Stainless Steel Series 8 deal from Walmart, and have not opened mine either. I am waiting til the last few days of its return period, to see if any similar fire-sale deals on the Series 9 come out in the interim. If not, I'll open it in the last few days, see if the watch charges up/battery is fine, and go from there. I plan on keeping it, as $299 for a recent stainless steel LTE watch with the oxygen sensor intact is too good to return.
I ordered this one after being disappointed the Walmart SS sold out. Glad I did since I was unaware people like to collect unopened Apple Watches
The sensor is on the watches. It's just disabled on the ones in the US made/sold after a certain date. After FDA approval of the sleep apnea tool, I wonder if Apple will buy the patent or pay whatever they need to the company that brought suit.
As it was described, the new sleep apnea detection tracks Breathing Disturbances, which is the name for the new metric. It uses the built-in accelerometer to detect small movements at the wrist that are associated with interruptions to normal respiratory patterns during sleep. So, as it is now, it does not rely on the sensor, but I'm sure it could help perfect it.

I really wanted to upgrade my Series 4 this year ad was hoping for an Ultra 3 being announced. With just the color being the difference I caved in and grabbed one of these natural titanium colored ones the other day.
I chose slow shipping to buy me some time to think about keeping it and also wait for any better deals. Amazon's Apple products return policy seems to be 15 day from date of receipt (hopefully I'm interpreting their policy correctly). Sucks it's such a short time for Apple returns at Amazon.
I also plan to just keep it sealed because from my understanding they don't take opened Apple products back for returns? is this correct?

Indeed. The 2024 "upgrade" is just a straight downgrade, unless you really are in awe of the new pretty color. I swear Apple is brilliant at peeing on legs and convincing people it's raining.
I have a $300 Masimo O2 sensor which is likely most accurate, but I rely on the watch sensor for tracking during sleep and other times. Apple's pettiness at apparently hiring away Masimo engineers and replicating patented secrets with them is crazy, Apple is a major player in patents. They could write a check and fix their watches, but instead try dropping it into the memory hole.
I recently got the stainless steel Apple Watch Series 8 deal for $299. Haven't opened it yet, and would like any insights from this group whether I should just get in on this Ultra 2 deal instead. I'm pretty much conflicted on the value vs having the latest tech.
The jump from Series 8 to Ultra 2 will offer a significant improvement in battery life…at a cost. It's also bigger and bulkier, but for me, the battery life offers utility that far outweighs the size increase.

After reading comments about buying refurbished I'm now debating grabbing one of the natural titanium Ultra 2 watches that is "Renewed Premium" from Amazon. They also have 'Used-Like new" for a few dollars less but not too sure what the difference is. I'd also be giving up the extended warranty coverage from my credit card going this route since it is not a new item.
Anyone have any experience buying any thing "renewed Premium" from Amazon and can share what they thought about the condition it was in?

I picked one up that was a credit return. 11 months left on the warranty and looks brand new. I didn't like the loop band and went back to my Nike sport band.
Where do you get these watches that still have Apple warranty left on them?

stick with v1 refurbished A grade when the price will drop to $399 around BF.

About 4 months after the Ultra 2 came out, BB had the Ultra 1 for $ 599 and $ 649. The difference in price.
The $ 599 had a poor color band, Since the genuine bands are $ 99, it's worth paying extra for a band you like.
I'll be looking for a similar deal this year on the Ultra 2.
I prefer a BB price match as I can get gift cards on my extra IPads, without having to mail in my trade. Too mail surprises on the mail in trade.
