YOU can use H20 sim card method to unlock the phone on Day 1.
1. Activate the phone with H2O sim card
2. Request to unlock the phone as non ATT customer on ATT website.
3. Phone will be unlock on day one.

I ordered a 256GB and this happened. I happened to have a Cricket SIM card which I used to instantly unlock the phone. Even if it's attached to your Verizon account, you can use a Cricket SIM card to unlock all U.S. Retail Flex policy iPhones.

Just remember you can only request a log in code from Verizon 3 times a day. Sometimes it doesn't work or arrive, and you'll have to wait till the next day to try again.
