Remember, curcumin is the active ingredient naturally found in the root known as turmeric, which looks similar to ginger. Turmeric is then processed into the spice powder you see in stores. However, curcumin makes up only about 3% of turmeric powder. While you can use turmeric as a spice in your food, the amount of curcumin in it is so small that you'd need to consume a large quantity to get a meaningful dose of curcumin for its supplemental benefits.

For example, I've seen turmeric powder sold at Trader Joe's in small jars for a high price. Many people believe they're getting curcumin or use the terms turmeric and curcumin interchangeably, but they aren't the same. If you're just looking for turmeric as a spice, I suggest shopping at South Asian grocery stores where you can find turmeric powder in larger quantities and at better prices.

This supplement, like many others, is standardized to 95% curcumin, which is what you need if you're looking for curcumin as a supplement. However, curcumin is known to have poor absorption in the body. To enhance absorption, piperine (an active ingredient in black pepper) is often used and should be included with curcumin to maximize its health benefits. This particular product includes piperine, which is great.

Most curcumin supplements come in capsules, which are often made from gelatin (derived from pork, or sometimes bovine, which would be specified). If you want to avoid pork products, you can simply unscrew the capsule with dry hands and extract the curcumin powder to mix into juices, teas, or smoothies.

Additionally, you don't always need to take the full dose listed on the bottle. Everyone's body chemistry is different, and some people may experience side effects like headaches, especially if they have kidney or liver issues. To minimize the risk of side effects, you can start with a smaller dose by unscrewing the capsule and using just a portion of the powder, then resealing the capsule for later use. Spreading the dose throughout the day can also help ensure a steady supply in your system, rather than having your body flush out the excess. This approach helps you get the most out of the supplement with fewer side effects.

Lastly, turmeric/curcumin easily stain everything very easily and the stain is stubborn. It also easily gets in your fingers if you touch it slightly. So, when unscrewing the capsule, just make sure your fingers are dry, and you dont touch the powder itself while handling the capsule.

I started taking curcumin for random middle aged aches, and it's been game changing. I also started it while hitting the gym and reversing f2 fatty liver and have seen dramatic improvements. (41M)

I would just add that this specific product has 900mg of tumeric and only 100mg of 95% curcumin.

I suppose you could as it can be opened and prepared as a tea, it does contain black pepper extract that will change the flavor though...

Careful turmeric can be toxic to the liver. If you drink and your liver panels are off your doctor will have you stop taking turmeric.

All the spices consumed at 'high volume' produce undesired results or toxic for some bodies. In moderation it works wonder.

This is not a slick deal. These capsules are 90% turmeric and 10% curcumin (check the picture of product label on Amazon). Otherwise you gave a nice summary.

Also, black pepper contains piperine as a major constituent -- around 4% of black pepper is piperine. So do the math. You only need not more than 20mg of piperine per dose. So you can use black pepper in place of piperine.

Some articles promote the use of Turmeric as a possible treatment for Alzheimer's and Dementia such as:

1/10/2024 Forbes article: 5 Science-Backed Health Benefits Of Turmeric

https://www.forbes.com/health/sup...-benefits/

While Redditors in the r/nutrition Sub Reddit routinely post this old 2013 video in response to Turmeric questions, this video discusses some of the science behind the supplement manufacturers claims related to the use of Turmeric for Alzheimers, memory loss, and dementia.

Poster is not advocating for or against turmeric. In case someone is struggling with a family or friend who is suffering from these horrible conditions and is considering Turmeric as a home remedy, they may benefit from this info.

Thank you. It does not change anything what I said except that I did not read the label on this that they are playing word games by saying "Curcumin Longa 900mg" and "Curcumin Longa 95% Curcumin" which is not the same 95% curcumin extract in each capsule. So, this is a very deceptive marketing on this. And I was wondering why so low price. Doctors Best and others have it but a lot more expensive for that very reason that they are Curcuminoids 95%. This one is mostly Turmeric powder and less than 10% curcumin (which should be about 95%.) So canceling my order on this one.

This is accurate. I grabbed 2 of these bottles just to supplement the life extensions brand curcumin extract I take.
