How much do you expect for a non-carrier promotion for a 4-year old base model phone?

AT&T & T-Mobile offer $1K value for iPhone 12 with their premium plans. Many are buying it for trading in with their carrier. Already got a 12 from Metro last deal, which was $50 more.

Keeping my current phones (13 and higher) as spares so I can trade these in instead for less.

If you don't auto-pay or extend service, there is nothing to cancel. You just stop paying. Based on what I have read, device should auto unlock after 12 months from activation and continued service is not required.

Check out the unlock policy link I shared earlier.

Nope, mine is still locked. My order on 10/17, which was to activate on 10/22, did not unlock. I have been checking every day since 04/22. I'm guessing the 1-year policy applies.
Did you try inserting a SIM card from a different carrier?
I bought my phones around August or September 2024, and they didn't display "No SIM Restrictions" until I inserted another company's SIM card. Hopefully, it'll be the same for you too!

No box is still sealed. The Apple server controls the lock status, so sickw was checked. Another thread on Metro iPhone indicates that they sometimes turn on the policy in October.

Does the SIM card have to be activated? For example, can I get an H2O wireless SIM card or freedom pop (both recently on sale at Target) and just put the SIM in the phone? Or do I have to pick a plan? TIA

No, it doesn't need to be active—just a SIM from a different carrier. You probably have one lying around. I usually just take the SIM out of my regular phone, insert it into the phone I'm unlocking, and then put it back when I'm done.

So I tried an H2O SIM (not activated) in one of my Metro iPhone 12s I bought last October, as I had bought the H2O SIM for <$1 at the Target sale. It gave a message to the effect of the SIM needs to be activated, then prompted me for a login, then said that my iOS was updated to whichever version 18.x, and prompted me to continue. The next screen was one where it basically was trying to activate, then it took me to an error message screen. I had to pop the SIM out to get it to go to the main screen. I restarted, still SIM locked. I tried various iterations of restarting the phone with the SIM in (same error sequence as above), restarting without the SIM, turning the phone off and restarting with the SIM, starting the phone and putting the SIM in the phone while it's on....restarting one more time for good measure....and, still locked.
Is sickw needed? Is it safe to enter your IMEI into it/any downsides to providing your IMEI to this third-party company? Do they use the data for something to their benefit/sell the data?

I'm sorry, I am not very technical and I don't have any solutions if that didn't work. I wasn't even aware that Metro changed their unlock policy to 365 days.

That said, I believe sickw is a legitimate website to check the unlock status of your phone. I don't know the specifics of what they do with your data though.

How did check the unlock by IMEI on sickw? Most iphones don't update unlock status unless sim is swapped or factory reset.

Did you manage to get your iPhone 12 unlocked? I bought 3 iPhone 12 last October 2024. 2 are still sealed in the box, one opened and activated. The 2 sealed in boxes are still SIM locked when I check today, 9/10/25; the one opened and activated is now unlocked. I think you have to have a SIM in the phone and activate it on the MetroPCS network to get the clock started. Now I have 2 iPhone 12s locked to MetroPCS.

I haven't tried recently as the first iPhone 12 I got was I think late October (ETA or early November). I tried several times after the 6-month mark, restarted multiple times, and nothing seemed to reset. So I decided to wait the full year.

Also, the 12s I got last year were all activated shortly after I received them, so all of them were activated by November of last year.

Couldn't edit my post, but wanted to let others know: I added the free Helium e-sim to the phone and it changed from sim-locked to no lock / working on Helium. Nice .
