Your better off getting a $6 2280 adapter and using a 2280 drive which is also cheaper.

These small drives have low endurance ratings as well 600tbw.
these run cooler than the 2280. you get an adapter yes, but that would create more heat and bulge in yhe layout. the 2230 is plug n play with lower draw and you case closes tight without having to modify it.

if im not trying to fit this into a steam deck or anything of the sort... is there a difference in form factor / shape/ length over a 2280 size? im mostly looking for a portable drive to edit files and move things around before archiving them.
I like the idea of a smaller drive vs a longer drive but if there is a difference in speed and heat then maybe id be best with a longer drive. i am looking for a decent sized drive with good/fast speeds to make changes on and transfer off my phone and other devices. any info would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance
I think it's best if you search for comparison between 2230/2242/2280 SSDs. These are the 3 most popular. They have the same width (22), different length (30/42/80). You can fit them in the same slot (2230 + 50mm extender = fits 2280 screw slot).

You usually find 2280 as the normal standard, and 2230 as the standard for small devices. 2280 specs-wise is better than 2242/2230 and price-wise is cheaper, but I'm not an expert, so you'll need to search more on that for your use case. 2242 is falling hard after the introduction of handheld gaming devices because it's similar to 2230 specs wise (both inferior to 2280), but physically longer, hence a net loss.

It really irritates me when the MODS put the Microsoft Surface as one of the applications for this type of drive. The MS Surface drives are in a small case that acts as a heatsink transferring the heat to the BOTTOM of the SSD, that way the heat is transferred to the Surface chassis. There's even a roughed-up area on the chassis under the drive to improve heat transfer. Adding heat tape to the top of this drive would do nothing. If you go with this solution, be prepared to deal with many random restarts.

Thanks for some info on where to start. I've looked around but I haven't found much saying the size ends up changing the performance. Like does the smaller size generate more heat. Personally I like the smaller size. I have a Samsung T5 but I want to have my own bare drive in an enclosure so I can swap it out when needed or if something happens to the controller. I've had older hdd that I can't get the data off because of the broken port/controller.

1) the mods didn't necessarily add it it is in the product name

2) this is generally seen as the best drive to use in surface devices (check Reddit r/surface) as it doesn't get too hot and runs fast

Why is this a deal? $85 for a 1TB drive? Just get a regular M.2, 1 TB that goes for cheaper.

The is one of the fastest SSDs for this size format you can buy and uses the E27T controller according to this:
https://www.tomshardware.com/best...steam-deck

I have this in a magsafe nvme enclosure that I use on the back of my iPhone 16 Pro Max to record ProRes log 4k/120fps video with spatial audio. It works great.

Two bad I got it last week for $20 more. FYI, even before this price cut it was still cheaper to buy two 1TB of these and two nvme magsafe enclosures then getting the 2TB version. Now it's even more lopsided.

got a link to the magsafe enclosure you use? thanks!!

Just gonna say this is overkill for for an iPhone Pro Log drive. The USB 3 interface on the iPhone cannot reach close to those speeds. I would probably recommend a cheaper 5000mbps drive and you would never see a difference. You can get the TeamGroup 2TB for $140 on Amazon.

It's fast. Great if you can actually utilize those speeds. Like in a surface laptop or possibly a ROG Ally or SteamDeck. It's a waste of money if you are going to put it in a USB 3 enclosure.

It's a good deal if you want just 1tb but, if you watch Aliexpress the WD SN740 2tb drive goes for $90-125.

I picked one up like 3 weeks ago for $98 shipped.... You need to watch them as they go up and down and they are plenty fast.

Used it in my SteamDeck...

Wait, how are you fitting a 2280 into the Go? I thought it could only fit a 2242 and below. Is the adapter allowing you to place the drive somewhere else? If so, where? Thanks for the info, and sorry about all the questions!
The adapter allows the 2280 to mount upside down so there is just enough room. My original 2242 drive was hitting temps of 92 degrees. I put in a hynix P41 there was enough room to also put a .5 mm thermal pad and close the original case without issue.

Temps are max 75 when downloading games on a fast connection. During gaming around 52 to 60. It's so much faster as well.

I used the "CY Card NGFF NVME M-Key 22x42mm to 22x80mm Male to Female Extension" from Amazon
