This is a pretty good deal at $200, and an obscenely incredible deal at $100 if you're able to get the ymmv $100 off any laptop microcenter coupon as mentioned below. The processor is decent for a low end laptop, and the only huge downside is the abysmal tn screen.
To my knowledge it is still possible to get the microcenter $100 off any laptop coupon as described in this deal: https://slickdeals.net/f/17573511-microcenter-100-off-any-laptop-coupon
You must be a "new customer" (aka. make a new account with a valid mobile phone number) to be eligible for the coupon. I was personally able to replicate it just a few weeks ago, and the latest comment confirms the coupon was still available just two days ago. If the method in the deal post doesn't work for you, the method I personally was able to obtain the $100 coupon with was through the following steps: Connect your phone solely to your mobile network (t-mobile in my case, make sure you aren't connected to wifi). Use chrome with the setting to permit pop-ups and redirects enabled (in the "content" subsection of "site settings", popups are blocked by default in mobile chrome). Open up an incognito tab with the exact url linked in that deal post, give the microcenter website permission to access location, and scroll down the page. If the pop up doesn't appear, or if it gives a different offer besides the "$100 off any laptop", close chrome and try again. It may take several tries for a pop-up to appear, and the $100 off any laptop offer pop-up seems to be rarer than the other offers.
The i3-1215u is a decent low end cpu, it's technically a 6-core processor but only has 2 performance cores, the other four are e-cores. The 12th gen alder lake architecture was a major leap in terms of intel processors, the i3-1215u has performance in a similar tier to the 11th gen i7-1165g7. For general purpose use (web browsing, basic office productivity, etc.) it should be sufficient, and vastly exceeds the "celeron" or "athlon" processors you'll usually see at this price tier.
The screen in this laptop is downright awful. Being tn means viewing angles are abysmal, the brightness of 220nits is even lower than the standard low end 250nits you'll see in budget laptops, and gamut coverage of 45%ntsc (~62% srgb) means colors will appear dull and washed out. The only saving grace is this laptop's price, at $200 the screen is only a major demerit, not an instant dealbreaker.
Having 8gb of soldered ddr4 3200 ram with an additional sodimm slot is good for this price range, being able to upgrade to 16gb in the future is a major plus. The 256gb gen 4 ssd is also good for the price, since at $200 you're still at the range that a**hole manufacturers will try to pawn off emmc e-waste storage onto customers. This laptop has a single m.2 2280 gen4 x4 slot occupied by the 256gb ssd. The other miscellaneous specs and ports of this laptop are decent for a budget laptop, and excellent for $200.
This laptop comes with windows in "s" mode by default, you can switch out of s mode for free by following the steps on this page: https://support.microso
Overall, this laptop would be an incredible deal at $200 if the screen wasn't so terrible, but for those for whom the screen isn't a dealbreaker, this laptop at $200 still reaches the level of a pretty good deal. If you're able to get the $100 off laptop coupon as mentioned above, this laptop is an absurdly good deal at $100.

I had tried endlessly last night to get the coupon on my phone and work computer. Never came up. Tried on my home computer and got a $50 one almost instantly. Maybe 15 or so tabs later and I finally got the $100 one. Didn't even have to disable ublock or enable location. So for those having trouble, maybe try on a different device.
When it pops up, all you have to do is type in your first and last name, email address, and phone number. It'll text a link to the coupon to your phone. No issues using it at pickup.

If anyone has a $100 off coupon they aren't going to use, I would love to use it. I'm trying to buy my mom a laptop for her birthday.
No usbc charging, screen is so-so but usable. Otherwise it's pretty solid.
Has anyone upgraded RAM on these? Do these have 8gig soldered and an empty slot?

Ran GPU benchmarks using 3DMark. Then purchased 8GB crucial ram on Amazon for $18 shipped. Increased GPU performance by ~30% because now it runs dual channel.
Now the bad… The screen is terrible.
