America's/Discount Tires sales tactic becomes worse

1,020 67 September 24, 2024 at 05:53 AM
I went to America's Tires because light was on 1 week after inflating tires. The tread is still at the second to last green. I suspected the passenger front tire was leaking air. I asked for repair, the rep refused after examining and stated ozone cracking. I had these General Tires for only 4 years with 20k miles. I didn't want to argue and ended up with his suggestions to use warranty credit to go for new set of Bridgestone tires.

I am not sure they are cracking or just normal wear. they didn't look serious. I think it's was just sales tactic. America's Tires used to fix flat until tread reaches red, now they upsell me. I am wondering if I should stop going to America's Tires.

Are you sure the air wasn't just leaking from around the rim? If it's an older car, the paint on the rims will start to bubble and flake off as the rim material oxidizes. If you see the deterioration on the outside of the rims, it means it's most likely happening inside the rim too where the tire bead seals against it. This can allow air to leak out of the tire and the proper fix is to remove the tire from the rim, sand off the bubbling/flaking paint so it's a smooth surface, and then apply bead-sealer and reinstall the tire. People often replace tires thinking that they are leaking air when this is all that needs to be done.

If that is the case, then new tires will leak air too. We will see

All ties leak air, it's a matter of how fast...

As to your OP, My bet is that someone had a serious accident and it was determined that ATC should have changed out the tires or notified the driver that they were unsafe.

Like most things, this is a judgement call and it all depends on who was working on your tires.
The amt of solar radiation your tires get while at home and at work/school is dependent on your location.

I'm in NorCal and I have tire covers for my RV as they sit there baking in the sun all day, every day of the summer soaking up all that UV.

They (the company doing the tire installation) are supposed to inspect the rim prior to installing the new tires and prep the surface and then apply bead sealer as necessary without you even mentioning it. This is just a standard part of a quality tire install. Pay attention to the tire pressure though over the next few days and make sure you're not still losing pressure at an excessive rate. You will always gradually lose some pressure over time, but not more than 1 PSI every 3 or 4 weeks. Cold weather will make the air leak out quicker too if the bead isn't sealed properly. I had some tires on an old truck like 10 years ago that were installed without the rims being properly prepped by the installer and they would lose between 4 to 12 pounds of pressure per night on a really cold night between single digits to low 20's Fahrenheit. I brought them back and had them remove the tires and properly prep the surface and it was fine after that.

I came back to the shop and asked for refund. Another rep this time. He didn't offer apology. I told him that they should not add services/fee without asking the customers. He told me that those extra services were good for me. Lol. It appears that it's company policy now to force certificates down people's throat. There is no $80 installation fee anymore, instead they have mandatory $88 lifetime balance fee. I got refund for the $138 certificate fee.

America's Tires is going down hill. Time to look for another tire shop.
