Just be aware there's a gen 2 that just released for $199 with 550 ft-lb rated breakaway vs this one's 250 lb-ft and is slightly more... Stubby
100 would be a deal for tool only. HD had this in the 2.0/4.0 kit for 180 (~112 hacked) the other month. FAO on eBay had the same kit for about 150 with the labor day coupon.

Gen 2 can only hit the higher 550 torque spec with a 5.0 battery, but the power draw on the gen 1 is lower so you can use a 2.0 in some cases. Also seeing posts on social media of the gen 2 being defective for some and not providing much torque.

If you really need the extra torque but not the smaller size, the 1/2 M18 mid torque was only 219 with 5.0 (resistant?) on daily deal at HD last week.
I'll wait for a Gen 2

A great deal for the 1st gen stubby. Some jobs actually need a less powerful tool so it won't damage the threads or over torque.

Had this for years and it's fantastic. Get the 3/8 though as this doesn't have the power to do most things where you'd step up to 1/2 sockets. It shines in sub 3/4-19mm fasteners where you'd typically use 3/8 sockets.
plus, the 3/8 pairs really well with the 3/8 power ratchet and a 3/8 impact set like the gearwrench 44 Piece. whenever im going anywhere, i grab those 3 things and it pretty much covers everything i need socket wise.

for most house (non-auto) stuff, impact driver with socket adapter should be enough?

These comments are about the Gen 2:

The nut-busting specs of the Gen 2 aside, anyone think the new method of changing torque settings might be hard to get used to (neutral, then double-press the trigger)?

It was mentioned before, but also kinda annoying that you only get the full torque with one specific battery.

Thanks, I bought the 1/2 but now thinking more, the 3/8 is more handy for a driver this size. I already have a larger 1/2 that works for lugs and big bolts.

Also good to know that the Gen 2 needs the new 5.0 battery to see that power, otherwise it's is pretty much on par with this model

Unless you have situations where the extra 1/2-3/4 inch will be an issue, just purchase an impact adapter to change it from 1/2" to 3/8". Keep it with your impact sockets or always keep it on the impact wrench when not in use.

Nicer to use the smaller 3/8 sockets as you get more clearance, putting an adapter will take up even more space.

What is the difference between the one with the silver front and those with the black front?
Thanks

Meh, wouldn't be too much. If you're worried about clearance that much, buy the right angled impact like this at 220 lbs

Or this at 250 lbs

Yes, impact driver will suffice for household use.

The gen 2 specs are impressive but come with an asterisk of requiring the most expensive m12 battery available to achieve those numbers (which takes away from the compact footprint), eating through batteries significantly faster than gen 1, and running significantly hotter than the gen 1 due to the use of some plastic internals in the place of metal. Also changing modes via the trigger isn't so much the feature they're touting so much as a concession, removing the mode switch to make room internally for the larger mechanism. The specs are super impressive but not without drawbacks.

I looked up the test results on TTC (working torque)

2555-20 (this one) - 145 ft-lbs
2563-20 (the new one $199) - 253 ft-lbs. (not 550 like it says. Maybe on mars).
Dewalt DCF891 ($199) - 443 ft-lbs

I have the 3/8 stubby for smaller items but the 1/2 makes no sense IMHO when the dewalt is the same price and significantly more powerful. BTW I have the DCF891 and it does lugs and suspension parts without a sweat. This specific one is highly underpowered for 1/2 application (IMHO).

So consider if you are looking at 1/2 application the stubby even the new gen 2 unless you NEED the form factor the slightly larger Dewalt is vastly more powerful for the same price as the gen 2 and then I would posit a 3/8 or impact driver is the correct tool for that torque range, sockets, and form factor.

HTH.

All high powered tools are limited by what the battery can deliver. Even the gen 1 needs the 5.0 or 6.0 to make peak power. Pair it with anything smaller your performance will drop.

People keep parroting about how the gen 2 without the 5.0 battery is essentially a Gen 1. No that's plain wrong. If you believe TTC's number, the Gen 2 with a 1.5ah battery produced the same output as a Gen 1 with a 5.0. Thats pretty significant when you think about it.

MUST get the 2ND gen m12 STUBBY IMPACT WRENCH as the TorqueTest YouTube channel has it.
The reviews are in!! [youtu.be]
The 2ND gen is one of the best wrenches ever made thus far, including 18v & 20v & air. However, the HIGH OUTPUT 5amp battery is mandatory, no smaller batteries.

Also change the title please, b/c this is called an impact WRENCH, not a driver. A Driver is a form of impacting screwdriver, so I thought it was the m12 driver, as I am looking for a next gen m12 surge impact driver on super sale.
Glad to see this. Was coming to link that most excellent review of the new one.
