I got epix gen 2 an year ago and am loving it. I used Apple watch for a couple of years and decided to switch to Garmin after a lot of research.

Pros of this watch over apple watch:
- Continuous heart rate monitoring (24 hours a day, 365 days a year) while apple watch detects only once every few seconds or minutes unless you started an activity manually. It is slightly more accurate than an apple watch too (but less accurate than a chest monitor) but is good enough for detecting fluctuations in heart rate. Thanks to this, I was able to detect a spike in heart rate for a few days and went to the doctor who diagnosed me with thyroiditis.
- Blood oxygen sensor (which is now discontinued in apple due to law suit)
- Sleep tracking. I got this mainly for sleep tracking and apple didn't have a sleep tracking feature (I had to buy an external app called autosleep on app store). Garmin connect app does it natively.
- Battery lasts for 2-3 weeks vs apple's 1-2 days.
- I love the morning report feature. It shows my Heartrate, HRV, body battery etc all of which tell me how I slept and also about my health in general. All my stats were messed up when the initial symptoms of thyroiditis started and slowly when I started getting better, my stats reflected that too.
- You are not restricted to apple phone. I use this watch with my pixel and if needed, I can also sync it to my office iphone. I think you can also download your data and do your own analysis but I didn't do this.
- It has lot of other features (baromter which alerts you of a storm, downloadable maps, and many other health features which I don't use yet but will do once I get back into fitness)
- I personally like the rugged look.

Advantage of apple watch over garmin:
- It is like a mini phone, so you can respond to messages etc on watch but apart from approving authenticator token prompts, I never used these features. They were distracting infact.
- It has ECG feature which is good but whenever I need to check my ECG (if at all), I just use my wife's watch
- Apple watch has a sound sensor to detect decibels in the environment but I didnt find it as useful.
- It detects automatically when you start running but in Garmin you need to manually start activity.
- It has fall detection and ability to call 911 (when connected to phone) which I think are good features.

Amazing watch. Got it when Sam's had it for $350. Not sure if it'll go down to that price again but worth waiting for BF unless you really need one now

Edit: I stand corrected, someone mentioned this is the Sapphire Edition which makes this a much better deal.

This is sapphire edition different from Sam's sale. Also color and type is making some price difference here. However November is not far, might wait !

Watch will continue to drop as it is two generations old. Though still a great watch.

There is no Epix 3 coming and the Epix Pro is only a year and change old. If you want an "adventure" watch with an amoled screen, this is your only affordable option from Garmin. The Fenix 8 is beyond insanely priced.

I heard that the Sapphire version actually makes the screen more difficult to read! Buying the regular version with screen protector is a better option. Again, only heard😂
I had the non-sapphire for about a month before swapping it out for the sapphire. I see zero noticeable difference in readability. It's possible that when viewing side by side there's a difference, but if that's the case it's immaterial.

Also for those that don't like white (I'm fine with it), you can swap out the band in 30 seconds. But be aware that the sides of the watch are still white.

Does this one store music like my Forerunner?
Yes it does. I use it with YouTube Music where I download specific playlists for running and workouts.

One important difference that others have not highlighted is this has 32gb in the Sapphire version vs 16gb for non-sapphire. This gives the ability to not only store more maps, but also more music.

I really want to get the pro, I love the idea of a flashlight on the watch. But I'm not sure. I want to pay an extra $300 for a flashlight.

Please go on a better sale pro, please.
I snagged the Pro sapphire model last year with the Walmart price mistake under $400. I can't believe how useful the flashlight is and how many times I've used it now. I wear the watch everyday, even while sleeping.

OMG lucky you - bet it's hard to have that price in a while.

It doesn't but if you follow the links to the manufacturer # and the specs, it shows Sapphire Crystal and 32GB

For what it's worth, this Sapphire model compared to the normal Epix Gen 2:

32gb vs 16
Maps preloaded vs downloadable
Multi band gps
Sapphire glass vs Gorilla
Slightly lighter weight

For some the GB and multi band gps doesn't really matter. I've never personally had an issue with my prior Fenixes with Gorilla vs the 6 sapphire I now have.

Also keep take a look at Forerunner 265 if you don't need maps.

Is this at $450 a better deal or is a Forerunner 265 at $350? I mostly will use it for running/biking. Not sure if this is overkill for my basic needs.
