Even if someone does buy an iPhone 12 or 13 with the intent to trade, carrier promos tend to be $70 (or higher) postpaid plans and, often, for 36 months of bill credits (though I think T-mobile does 24 months). Even a monthly charge of $50 * 36 months is $1800 total paid, plus probably tax on a phone that is at the cheapest, $800 for the regular iPhone 16. Which doesn't seem to be any better than buying an iPhone 16 for $829 or a Pro for $1000 up front and getting a more economical phone plan. Particularly since they might be paying anywhere between $75 (for the iPhone 12) to about $180 with tax for this iPhone 13 deal.

People who traded in an iPhone 12 (which was the same price at this iPhone 13 a few weeks back) got a Pixel 9 as a straight trade.
$175 for a brand new Pixel 9 isn't bad.
Other people use them as trade ins for carrier deals because they either have grandfather plans or someone else paying the bill (expensing to work) and for them, $175 for an iPhone 16 Pro on a two-year T-Mobile contract is a good deal.
It's all about individual circumstances.
Now that stock on the iPhone 11 is gone at Metro and the iPhone 12 is very thin, the iPhone 13 is likely going to be their "deal" phone for the next 12 months or so. I'd expect the iPhone 12 to fall off their lineup after the holidays.
The SE3 will probably be the free iPhone and the iPhone 13 the entry level w/upcharge.
