Thanks OP! I just added a google voice number to my google account and ported that in. Takes no time at all. You'll need to go to GV settings and pay $3.00 to unlock the number. You'll also need to enable the "Call to Listen" setting under Voicemail which will let you set a PIN which Metro will ask for. You'll also need the google account number which is just the phone number.

Have a look at Metro's unlock policy (https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/t...k-policy):

Later on it states:

Please note that your phone's activation date is different from your account's activation date.
A member of another forum was a Metro Authorized Dealer. He said Metro requires that there were activities (calls or texts) on a device before unlocking it.

Thanks for this info, any ideas of how many calls/texts are required?

Porting is initiated during the ordering process, how do you intend to not port your number?
I have received my phone, but the number isn't ported.

I see, which provider were you porting from?

There have been hiccups from other carriers. Visible seems the best for porting.

They have spelled out the distinction between account activation and device/phone activation:

Please note that your phone's activation date is different from your account's activation date.
That's only relevant for accounts with multiple lines. The account activation date could have been months and several phones ago but the phone activation date is what matters here

It's also relevant for single-line accounts if you don't turn on and activate the phone.

Have you tried leaving one sealed (although line / device activated in their system) to see if it still unlocks after the required time?

I'd love to hear from a couple of people who have actually tried it. The written terms are often conservatively written to be on the safe side and also allow for enforcement tweaks down the road. And any info from someone associated with the company never seems to be reliable.

I don't know the exact numbers. When I had Metro phones that needed to be unlocked, I made/received some calls and texts (about 5 each) during the first 2 weeks after device activation, then stored them away. They got unlocked without problems.

Thank you, that helps. I will make a few more calls then.

Hehe … I haven't done a Metro deal in like a decade because it seems like the good deals were almost always in-store only and shady reps. But I just got in on the free 12 last month and decided to grab another since the second line is half price. I'm tempted to activate that one, leaving it sealed and see if it unlocks, but still mulling. Smilie

With the unlock wait being 1 year now, you won't find many people willing to try that to find out their phone won't unlock after 1 year.

Yeah, that seems to be the biggest issue, as it's just such a long time. In fact, I'm tempted to try it, but there's a decent chance I'd end up trading it away on some other deal before the time is up anyway.

You can activate the phone online without ever opening it. They also send you an email to confirm your phone has been activated which you can use as evidence later. It should count as long as they don't say you need actual activity on the phone to count as "activation".
