I'd normally skip AppleCare+, but my adult son has the Pros, from Costco, with AppleCare+, and has used the coverage - wasn't a pain free experience due to Apple whining, but he did get them replaced for the $29 replacement fee.
Amazon deal $169 + 29 (AppleCare) = 198, comveniently Amazon's semi-routine price without AppleCare+
Our current Costco price is $199, including AppleCare+ and we'd expect the Costco price to perhaps drop to $189 for BF. Does anyone believe Costco will drop their price below $189 for BF?

Target came thru with the PM:
A refund in the amount of $23.20 + any previously applied taxes has been approved for the items listed below.
I bought these and got them with Apple care plus. It would replace everything for an additional $29
I didn't buy AppleCare for my basic AirPod gen 2's but I only paid about $70 for them. Lasted fine for several years of mostly careful, but not perfect care. Battery in one now is dying.
I'll be buying the Airpod Pro 2 over the next month or two and might get the $29 AppleCare, even leaning toward Costco since it is included.
I look at AppleCare like any insurance - what is the expected likelihood of an "event" and what does it cost relative to having to replace the item without coverage? Generally if I can afford to replace the item, I skip insurance.
The financial ("Expected Probability") calculation - if the item costs $200 to replace, the "insurance" costs $29, and the likelihood of needing the coverage is 1 in 3 over the two year covered period, 33% (1 in 3) times $200 would be $67… and a replacement "event" costs another $29 plan copay, or $58 including the plan cost… $58 is less than $67, but not by much… so I'd be somewhat ambivalent about buying the coverage unless I like the peace of mind. This calculation can be applied to any insurance or extended warranty - simply another type of insurance - decision.
