if you're car camping at a developed spot, just buy whatever tent is on sale at wal-mart at the time

These tents are for people who are hiking into the back country, and their lives depend on them

You can just walk 5 feet to you car then buy another tent for $30 if something goes wrong.
More like lighter weight tents.

I was really disappointed with MSR a few years ago. Had my older hubba hubba start falling apart despite being taken care of and stored appropriately. It's just an age thing with the lightweight tents, the waterproof coating starts flaking off. They basically offered me 20% off the price of a new one.

I have a much cheaper, older alps mountaineering that when I called about a tear in the rain fly, all I did was paying shipping and they sent out a new one.
It depends on what you are doing. If you are in average temps, low winds, and no rain/snow go for the cheap tent. If it will be very hot then find a tent with a lot of mesh when the fly is off. If it will rain/snow find a tent that is seam sealed and has a fly that goes to near ground level. If it will be really windy get a higher quality tent with more poles and/or tie down points to prevent the tent from being blown flat with you in it. Generally a tent with all these features is about $200-350 full price for a 2-person and sometimes can be had for under $100.

Anyone have experience with a good car camping tent?
The Habitude 6 is my car camping tent. It's a beast and excellently made. I paid $250 on clearance at REI a few years ago. $350 isn't bad compared to msrp.

It doesn't come with a footprint though. A harbor freight tarp takes care of that.

At risk of sounding old timee... Msr was great before they were acquired by Cascade Designs in 2001.

Prior to that the customer support was amazing. They'd send me any stove part I needed just by asking. Haven't bought much from them since as the value has been flat or downhill on their items since then.

Mid-summer use fair weather light duty shelter. Weak poles. Not worth the money.

Ok, but nobody calls them "Mountain Safety Research". Those that do probably also call them "International Business Machines" and "Bavarian Motor Works".
Call them MSR like the rest of the world. Don't be weird.

+1, crappy customer service was my experience as well. The rainfly on my old Hubba Hubba has disintegrated. This was a known issue and the best they could do was offer me 20% off a new tent, a slap in the face considering they have sales 30-50% off during the year.

Seems the brand isn't what it used to be. Lots of poor reviews on seams failing within 2-3 years. Pass for me.

Why do this? It's terrible.

Let's say you're camping 3 nights and it's 2 hours from a decent store. It rains, strong wind breaks something and your crappy tent floods on night 1, what do you do? Give up on your trip? Waste 4 hours buying a new crappy tent and contributing to landfills?

Buy something decent even for car camping. Stoic, REI, Alps, all cost 3x a Walmart tent but last 3x longer, and you won't be regretting it at 3am when it rains.

One of the buckles on my MSR snowshoes broke a few years ago. They said their lead time was 4 weeks but was able to get my snowshoe to them and back in 1.5 weeks. Awesome warranty!

That's damn near all backpacking/hiking stuff these days. I used to buy Merrell shoes that lasted 2-3 years, now I'm lucky to get 1 season out of them. All my old Dueter backpacks are still going strong, newer ones tear and rip in 6 months. Every bit of quality from everything is total garbage now, it sucks.

I know it doesn't mean anything but the hubba hubba 2-person tent I bought 8 years ago retailed for $312.

I've had my hubba hubba nx2 for like 5 years. I think I've only ripped it twice (dog) and had REI repair it for like 50 bucks. The detachable garage for bicycle or gear is pretty neat too. Just like anything else there are cheaper options out there that will do the same thing. with that said, I haven't needed to upgrade or replace my tent but I guarantee you can find something WAY cheaper if weight isn't a concern.

Years back that hubba was be goto backpacking tent but for a bit now they've had faulty poles and people have moved onto Nemo & Big Agnes due to the issue and bad customer support.
Strange since I've had a naturehike for5+ years that has been a pleasant surprise in durability. How the hell can they not compete in durability with a chinese knockoff when they charge twice as much, ON SALE?!
