The higher the MERV rating, the more it impedes air flow, and so on older systems it stresses the components. Yes, it filters better, but it also applies more stress.

Do you worry about the strain on newer systems when running with high merv ratings over the long run?

My HVAC installer said to never use them even on newer systems and to just use the cheapest Merv 8 and replace every month. I have a brand new system and a wife with terrible allergies.

Does anyone have recent experience ordering these from Amazon? I have to order a 4" filter for the upcoming annual service and, having seen what can happen to steel cans shipped by Amazon, I'm a little concerned about the integrity of a furnace filter in shipping.

I always use only MERV 8 filter and use stand alone HEPA air purifiers. It's better for your furnace and does a better job cleaning the air.

I think you look at what your system recommends. Newer ones may well work with better filters.
But if you need allergy filtering, getting a separate stand alone HEPA filter is likely better, and use simpler (MERV 8) whole house filters that won't strain your AC. It's what I did for my terrible allergies. Standalone in bedroom and living room (washable HEPA filters you can clean as often as you want) and just regular filters on whole house AC and replace them every 3 months.

Don't use anything higher than MERV 8 unless your system is designed to handle it... The higher the number, the more difficult it is for your system to move air through the filter. Which can potentially damage your equipment.

I just take a Phillips head screwdriver and poke about 20 holes through the higher Merv filters. Problem solved. 🤣

Heck I was told to only use merv 1 (fiberglass filters) and use other air purifiers for indoor air quality. Unless your hvac system is specifically designed for high merv (at which point, you probably have a box to 5" filter and not 1" filter etc). And this is for a mid-higher end system that was installed earlier this year (Bosch).
