Depends on your situation. Do you need another HDMI input? Want slightly more power? Does "Made in Japan" carry weight for you?

My take is that the 3800 is the "Slickdeal's darling" because it's 90-95% of the 4800 w/o the additional hundreds of dollars (they even share the same DAC and have the same Dirac functionality)!

Good old Amir. The differences between modern DACs are well below the threshold of human hearing. Test benches though can reveal some differences, plus I'm sure there are differences in the noise floor, etc., between different individual units. It's probably about the absolute last thing you should worry about while building out your system. Different speakers, subs, displays, etc., are where you should worry about individual performance, along with your room, treatments, etc. Those things will absolutely make a very noticeable difference. DAC's maybe your dog can tell the difference.

Well don't let jonathan know, he has "judged" SVS subs as terrible!

Unfortunately you're not going to use that SVS to its potential especially if you use streaming content which is what a soundbar is designed for.
AVRs are now just for a high speaker count theater. If you have a regular family or tv room, sonos is perfect. This is coming from someone who used to have AVRs everywhere. When it was time to upgrade the avr with the tv, the avr nonsense games being played, I went sonos. Now I see the light. I think there are many like me now. They killed themselves. Now they are a low volume highly specialized product which for them to survive they need to increase the prices and I doubt that's going to work for them. Guess they could always figure out some SaaS or Ads lol. Customers love that.

I will never need 9.4. I wonder what the highest quality 5.1 or 7.1 receiver is. Seems the focus is on number of channels rather than power and sound quality.
These days, the power you want typically comes w/more channels than you may need. I would ignore the number of "excess channels" an AVR may have and just buy the most powerful AVR you can afford with the minimum features you want (i.e. Dirac, # of SW connections, etc.)!

I understand the appeal and I agree there are many like you.

I've set up many soundbars and the one thing you sacrifice is sound quality.
That should not be a surprise since soundbars are designed for simplicity and convenience, that's what you are paying for.

It's not about high speaker count, a 5.1 speaker based setup will easily give you better SQ than a some 11.1.4 Atmos soundbar or even a Sonos.
Proper implementation is key and that's the main reason there are so many of you.

The irony here is the very complaint you have with AVRs is what a soundbar is built on...technology.
TBH I get more people reaching out to me with soundbar issues than the speaker based system. Just look at the soundbar threads in here for those issues.

BTW when you brought up soundbars couldn't resist yanking clueless JonathanJ's chain!
Makes judgements because of measurements "facts" then turns around and says "sometimes simplicity and convenience rules them all"! Rofl3

Can the soundbar trolls stick to their own threads plz? Yes it is convenient for some like streaming compressed stuff is. No it is objectively not the same quality.

To some extent but you also get better room correction options with units like the x3800h. How important that is is up to you though. You can use additional channels in another zone too. If that doesn't seem worth the expense then a good compromise could be an x1700h from Costco for $400. The RC is a step down but they are great to deal with if you ever have an issue so that gives peace of mind.

Good luck with that!

As you can see you'll always get those people that say they are "impressive" and "it's not far off from your traditional 5.1 avr install in terms of sound quality"! 🙄

waiting on AVR to arrive.

wondering, when I run with Audyssey calibration, since it has the XT-32 flavor, when it calibrates the sub, will I need to move my subwoofer? only asking b/c its been like 8 yrs since I ran Audssey setup, but my older Marantz AVR only had the XT flavor of Audyssey so no sub calibration. and back then there was talks of doing a sub crawl but I didn't really do that but did move it from 1 place to another within the room.

and then did the manual spl meter and forgot what other settings.

anyhow, I can probably find a video online about it, but just wanted to see how easy it is to setup the sub....which I hope is easy, since that was one of the benefits of getting an AVR with XT-32 with sub calibration.
TIA!

Proper placement of a sub is critical for optimal performance.
Now this can be a challenge in the average home especially if the sub has a large footprint.
Often you have to compromise and make it work the best you can.

A sub crawl is a good idea and kind of do it the way you did just listen where you would realistically be willing to place the sub.
Run Audyssey and if it sounds good to you, you're done, that's all that matters.

I would highly suggest using the $20 editor app preferably on a tablet/laptop.
Allows you to make adjustments you normally wouldn't be able to, worth the cost imo.

Hey man, you're always helpful in these discussions. I have a few few questions for you:

I have a monoprice monolith 15" sub. Thing is deeper than my sofa. If I do the subwoofer crawl, should I face the speaker on the sub toward my screen or toward the back of the sofa? I sit about 7 feet from my screen so having the speaker face the screen puts the speaker much closer to the screen than where my ears are.

Which settings should I turn off when running audyssey? Dynamic EQ?

I currently have the sub at +5 db after running audyssey. Does that sound safe for the sub?

When you mention using the denon app, are you just tweaking by ear?

Thanks!

Yikes you're trying to open up a big rabbit hole!
Here are two videos that should help.
1st is pretty basic, 2nd has more information on why.

Adjustments are all personal, trying to do them on a phone is a big challenge.
That is why it's better to use a tablet or laptop with the app.

Subs are omni directional so technically shouldn't matter.

Would be a pleasant surprise, but unlikely.
The 3700 never hit that mark and this is better.
