For those who are only interested in trading in the phone to apple for a gift card, you can use your current phone number and port out information but once you get the phone, just bring it straight to apple without actually doing the port out or activating the new phone with metro.
You're going to be in a spot if the phone activates by default due to a timeout (the port goes through at that point) and you no longer have access to the phone with the number attached.

You'll have to go into a physical Metro store to deal with it.

Have you done this? And is there a different value to an unopened iPhone 12 compared to one that was used for a day or two? I've never tried this, but I always figured that as long as there is no actual damage or any apparent wear and tear, and the phone is in working condition (turns on, battery holds a charge), the potential to get the maximum value for each respective iPhone model would be there.
There's nothing extra for a sealed phone and I don't think the person meant take the sealed box -- probably meant just take the phone as is without turning it on or doing anything

Apple Store needs to access the Settings menu so you're better off doing the basic setup yourself to let the eSIM activate then delete the eSIM before you trade in -- you don't have to link the phone to an Apple account so skip that part ("skip" should be under create new Apple account screen)

In the past I would do online activation to complete the port process (that way you have fulfilled your promo requirements) then go through basic setup w/ eSIM and skip Apple account -- delete eSIM after setup (or move it to another compatible phone so you can still access your Metro account) then take it to the Apple Store

Can't you just set up the phone without actually activating it (like if you were only going to use it for wifi) and then the apple store should still be able to get to the settings.

I assume once you get the phone you could call your carrier and ask them to change the phone PIN so metro wouldn't be able to do the port.

It doesn't work like that. The PIN is used to authorize the port at the point of sale for Metro.

Once the purchase goes through, it is a pre-authorized port in the pending stage at Metro. Activation (whether by you or automatically by Metro) is simply the final step.

If you care about your numbers, you should activate on Metro and then port out to another carrier. Trying to avoid activation may work if you get lucky, but if Metro auto activates the line after a given time, the number still ends up at Metro.

Anyone trying to keep the phone sealed for resale is asking for trouble. If you want to resell, you should activate the device, either delete or migrate the eSIM to another phone, and then sell the iPhone. Otherwise you're asking for potential complications.

What's the issue with leaving the e-sim on the unopened phone assuming that you don't care about the number?

If you're trading it in, not much.

If you're selling it on, having an eSIM on the device will open you up to a Not as Described claim on eBay, etc. if you sold it as "brand new". If the eSIM (and account, suspended or not) is paired to the device and you sell it on to a Metro user, they won't be able to activate it on Metro and that will also generate a Not as Described claim.

If you want to resell the smart thing to do is:
  • Activate the line.
  • Move the line to another device to ensure the original IMEI is clear.
  • Factory reset the iPhone.
You can do all of that with an open box, without having to remove the plastic on the phone.

Advertise it as "like new, open box, SIM removed" and anyone buying will know exactly what they're getting.

Why the downvotes for this? I'm not usually an Apple fan but seems OK.

Thanks for the info, I didn't realize the port could take several weeks - I had read 5-7 days. What happens if the account expires before the port-in completes? Does the port get cancelled? The reason I ask is that one of the numbers is actually a "good" number that I want to keep (and port back to NumberBarn). The problem is that that number is associated with a phone which I didn't want to open so I'm unable to receive the PIN that is needed in order to get the port-out info. I then tried transferring the number to a different phone but it gave an error. Maybe the error is because the number hasn't finished porting-in. I will call Metro and try forcing the port. Thank you
The phone number for the Metro port dept is 800-518-7519. You want to get the port in completed. Other people on this thread have given lots of useful information that may help you.

You can leave it sealed as long as you have another active line on the account to receive an OTP. Activate it remotely from the order tracking page, then call and get the line switched to another IMEI (cannot be one already associated with another line). There is a $25 fee that you should be able to get waived.

Thank you for your detailed reply! I think I now understand the implications of selling an activated but unopened Metro device without having moved the line. For opened phones, I can simply delete the eSIM after the line is deactivated, right? Because earlier you said "If you want to resell, you should activate the device, either delete or migrate the eSIM to another phone, and then sell the iPhone." Thanks!

You can also transfer the line to a different phone online, but it wasn't working for me. I think it's because the number for that line hadn't finished porting-in.

Anyone know what happens if you receive the phone and do not activate service with Metro?
