You can unlock all Tracfones after 60 days (the 12 month requirement went away almost 3 years ago).

Was in same boat about 6 months ago, trying to decide whether to go with a flip like the Nokia or a smartphone like the Moto G Play 2024. Kid is 10 and was starting 5th grade. We wanted him to have a phone so we could text him if plans changed (ride the bus, get picked up, etc) or for him to contact us if something came up.

I went with the Moto G Play 2024 and used Google's Family Link to limit the phone functionality.

Using Family Link, I disabled EVERYTHING except the phone, messages, Google maps app. I also disabled Google Search as otherwise, Google search would allow YouTube videos and websites to load through search (weird but true).

Nice thing is his (the phone's) location will show up in my Google apps so indirectly, I can see where his phone was last online. Had a slight spike in data use due to him using Google Maps while riding the bus to watch the dot move in real time but I downloaded local maps, disabled traffic view and told him to not switch satellite view on as that uses more data.

So far so good.

We stressed to him that this is strictly to help him reach us or be reached. if he mis-uses it, he loses it. He's not supposed to share it with friends as he knows it's a prepaid with limited minutes and texts intended to last the ENTIRE school year. If he blows through it, he'll have to pay to have it reloaded.

Eventually, he will need something more than the TracFone plan especially when he gets old enough to share the number with approved friends. The phone auto unlocked after 60 days, am thinking to use the phone with tello down the road, they have some cheap plans (unlimited text and call, 1GB for $9/month).

Old phone line is dead, even account doesnt show active line
That's why you need to activate one of these phones first (maybe create a new account), transfer/combine the service to the 2nd, then move the service to your old phone. You can usually re-use the (TF/Verizon) SIM in the old phone (if service expired more than 1 year or on non-Verizon, TF may not let you reuse the SIM. Simply buy a $1 BYOD TF/Verizon SIM for the old phone.)

apologies, I'm not the sharpest knife here either - will those steps work for an existing # that I'm using on another (unlocked fwiw) phone. It is set to expire in a few days and I'd like to apply these 2x times toward my original # balance. Would that work? I'm not sure I got the "transfer" part in your post. Thanks for sharing your experience!
DIY Guide [reddit.com] for transfer/combine service. You may want to add a $19.99 90-day 60TTD or $15 30-day 500 TTD plans to avoid service expiration (don't add unlimited plans). See my post above if the service already expired when you receive these bundles, but you may lose existing phone # and service.

For the 1200 texts per year, thats outbound only, correct? Thinking of getting this for a Grandparent instead of the $50/mo android they barely use
I think text/minutes are deducted for both inbound and outbound.

So I got some of those 24gb 1 year tracfones last winter. And it's coming up on a year. So Im guessing the benefit here is I can use these phone plans to add a year to my existing plans, and add minimal data 1.2GB for a year. To which I somehow add additional data later. Correct? Am I missing the purpose here, we are really buying the one year time unit? And how do i transfer these one year time units to my existing phones.

Tracfone really get you in some mind benders dont she? I love it.
Yes, great for service extension. DIY guide [reddit.com] to transfer service. However, it's complicated when combining Unlimited plans with PAYG (Pay as You Go) buckets in these bundles. It may work the other way [howardforums.com] (Unlimited to existing PAYG) but not sure about PAYG to Unlimited (TF may create separate plans in the account without extension of the unlimited.)

These phones are good to throw in your glove box for emergencies.
Just make sure to make a call or text now and then. TracFone terms say they will deactivate a phone with no activity in 6 months (smartphone) or 12 months (dumb phone).

Use the excellent instructions in Crazy8SD's post to do the "activate with transfer". Do you know which carrier your phone is using on TF? when re-activating your BYOP SIM with a transfer from Flip phone #2: TF will re-use a TF/Verizon BYOP SIM, but for TF/T-mo they will require a new SIM, and I don't think you can re-activate a line on TF/AT&T now.

Wow, how were you able to block all those things?...please provide some feedback, my wife has been asking me about it but couldn't figure out the right way to do it. Thanks in advance 👍
You use the Google Family Link app.

You would need to have your own Google login. You set up a Google login account for your kid that you are the parent for. I did this on a Chromebook first.

Then, you sign in to the phone with your kid's login and install the Family Link app. The phone will show up on your Family Link app under your kid's profile. Click on the phone, select Controls. Under screen time, it will list all apps on the phone. You can block apps or set time limits for specific apps as well as an overall screen time limit for the phone. You can also set downtime schedules for the phone (e.g. locks 8pm - 8am).

New account likely won't work either, they tend to catch it & cancel orders before shipping.
No coupon for current customers (as usual).

yup, I knew it was plus taxes. I didn't try to check out to see how much they were, figured I'd look into options when the time came. Tello was the one that stood out today (for me) as an affordable plan for my kids once we outgrew TracFone

I haven't tried it, but from another forum "HELLO10 promo code takes off $10 for a second purchase".
