Got it from Kickstarter, but still in the box. The hardware wise is way better than Synology.
Software side, Synology is the best. I have two units (2-bay and 4-bay) running > 10 years and no issue so far.
Let's say someone I know worked for this company. I would recommend everyone to avoid anything from them that has custom software in it. That includes things like Bluetooth receiver and in this case NAS devices. They have no idea how to develop and manage software, has 0 sense of information security, and there's no valid engineering practice whatsoever.
Their product that has no custom software are great, like USB hub or charge cable (yes cables has software in them, just not customized).
I dont need their support. I need ability to flush it with some other NAS software that is in support and is updated for security vulnerabilities. Synology does not provide that. Everyone else does.
What he said. I got one for 25 bucks more than this deal and never used their software. I want the hardware to do what I want with it. Promox truenas pfsense etc

Would you say it's safe to reload the nas with your own software? That's what most people do with this nas.
I've been looking at these type of NAS solutions and every time I see the price, I'm like nah I'm good. I'll just build another upgraded server in my Fractal R5 come black friday. Besides the space saving, I'm not seeing much benefit to these devices.

Why not just build a small PC? It would be cheaper and you'd have more hardware flexibility.

You cannot get rid of the BIOS. I would not trust so. But to be fair, yes usually use 3rd party OS will make things much better.
I thought the same but ultimately figured most others can be just as questionable unless you go with a real nas but then you won't have freedom to load your own os.

I don't worry about privacy or freedom stuff (there's none already, just depends on how much people want to negotiate with that), but quality in this case. I had too much trouble as an insider and as a consumer with this ODM.
Good box for running TrueNAS/Unraid. I am personally running Unraid on my DPX4800+. The built in OS, UGOS is pretty bad, missing lots of features for the price point.
I also have a DS923+ from Synology, and the OS (DSM) is miles ahead and easier to use. That being said, I got the DPX4800+ during the 40% pre order pricing, for that price (Sub 500) it is worth it. I dont think at this "sale" price that it is worth it over a Synology DS923+, even though the Ugreen has better specs.

Synology turns into a dud in 10 years. No support, no upgrades, no new apps. Can not flash it with anything different. This will last much longer. And lot more power\flexibility
My 218+ stopped receiving automatic updates already in 2022 (4 years). Luckily I can at least install them still manually.
