If you do S&S at Amazon, you get these at $3 per filter. Very standard RO system filters, have been using them for a while.

This sediment filter design gets plugged a little faster than the wound ones, so you may replace the sediment by itself mid-cycle, then at full cycle replace all again.

The wound sediment ones seem better on paper, but seeped too much iron rust into the next carbon one for me:

Can anyone chime in on their preferred RO systems that use generic filters rather than the over priced proprietary filters? Thanks!

Most RO systems use the standard 10 x 2.5 in filter casings. They try to obfuscate the fact to force you to buy the "branded" filters.

I have this system, and the 10x2.5 filters fit perfectly:

This is a really good price for APEC!

Add a pump yourself which will decrease water waste:

Good deal, carbon filters tend to be around $5/ea.
I recently made the switch to 1 micron sediment -> 1 micron carbon -> and then .5 micron carbon. My water isnt that bad I guess, goes through a softener first, because the filters tend to last awhile. I been happy with spiropure sediment and carbon filters, I get them from allfilters.com but Amazon carries them too.

Reverse osmosis (RO) and pass through systems are quite different. For pass through you want much better filtration, for RO you just want the water good enough to go into the membrane which will discard the bulk of remaining stuff.

@TalentedHaddock257 Naive question, do the 5-stage systems (like the APEC you linked) take 2 types of carbon filters (e.g. GAC, ACB)? Do these need to be different granularities, or do you just use 2 identical ones for stage 2/3?
