I used to love uifi products because of their software and reliability. They actually use cheap hardware. Most of their switches and routers have issues with ports suddenly stopped working. I had that happen to me on my router and two switches. These are so prone to power surges, you really need to plug them into a UPS. Honestly, just buy a small mini PC and turn it into a router and pair it with an unmanaged switch of your choosing. There's better open source software out there.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this will consolidate my Dream Router and CGK into one device? Only thing I'd be losing out on is my two PoE ports?

OP, while protect is great there is no support for motion events with ONVIF (yet), you'll be losing a lot moving from Blueiris
You can have one do detections and protect do archiving. I am planning to do that with Frigate.

It cannot be repeated enough: If you buy it with "No storage," you cannot add your own storage without the $20 tray ($5 of value). They're essentially punishing you for not buying their overpriced storage.
I installed my own storage. It works just fine.

I have a two story house with my router on a far side, does Ubiquiti have wireless access points and is it worth it over my current Orbi. My main complaint is my Sonos speakers have issues with my phone moving access points and little issues. Other than that I have no problems

How much actual power does this consume? I know max spec is 16w but want to know observed actual power. Haven't seen this on Reddit or in reviews that I looked through.
I have the UCG ultra and it takes 4w.
If someone hast his working, would be great if you can measure it and post.

If you buy the tray it will. Without the tray, how?

People have also been 3d printing their own trays.

With that being said, the official tray acts as a heatsink to keep the ssd cool, so 3d printing one depends on how hot your ssd gets as some run hotter than others.

As a hobbyist, I don't particularly want to replace my fios router. Are these things still useful sitting behind one of those?

Yes. Metal is good. People probably were doing it because the tray wasn't in stock, or didn't want to pay $29 with shipping. If you order with the UCG-max just get the official one for $19.
Don't be penny-wise here.. Plenty of other places to save that money.

Dream router has WiFi which this does not. Everything else is an upgrade from Dream Router. Also why do you need cgk if you have router? Protect?

you right..

If I had the option I'd probably get a/the new Dream router (hopefully they come out with it), supporting dual-wan (I need) and SSD for protect. I'm just ordering this on a whim, don't need 2.5G and am not really sure of how good Protect is, but want to see how it fits my needs. I also have Ring cams in addition to my Dahua/Amcrest etc so maybe I don't need motion on the NVR, and can just navigate the full stream if needed for "forensic" purposes.

BTW, I lost my BI key when I moved from my old PC to a Proxmox VM on a N100, and it seems to show Evaluation version and keeps running. Is the Eval version (other than the overlay message) doing the same as the full license one? I'll buy a new BI license if I can't get Protect at least as backup, before I move over..

Eventually want to migrate to Unify access points, but I'm stuck with a recently bought Orbi mesh system. Is it possible to use Orbi in AP mode and still get all the networking features that Unify provides?

hmm. other than any access point controls, yes I guess.. The gateway is the gateway/router. It's gotten realy good now, I replaced my PfSense with it finally and am very happy with single app/control. Dual Wan, VPN (wireguard, openvpn, teleport) all work fairly well. I have the UCG ultra + three APs and a few unifi switches, all with VLANs and guest etc. common management interface. Contyroller also running in the same box is good. I want maximum simplicity with fewest hardware points of failure. Used to have a self-hosted controller on Debian VM on Esxi etc. Finally everything on one simple box.
I kind of miss feeling like a Ubermensch with the zillion parts in the network stack/home-lab, but it's good to have a simple white box instead..
