This looks like a solid mid range gaming laptop. FHD screen suits the 4060 GPU, 360Hz response time is fast (Review lists 165Hz) and 300 NITs of brightness is adequate. Most laptops at this price will come with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD, so I consider 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD to be a nice bonus.

review : https://www.notebookcheck.net/Del...585.0.html

Pros:

Excellent if power hungry CPU.
140W 4060 GPU. DLSS. 8GB VRAM.
32 GB RAM.
2TB SSD.
Decent port selection, USB-C DP (no PD)
7 Hours of battery life for video/productivity (~1 hour when gaming).
Cons:

Dell utilizes non-conventional M.2 2242 slots (M-key) for storage. Users should take this into consideration when adding or replacing NVMe drives.
Port placement is not ideal with USB-A only on right side. No USB-C charging.
Large and heavy. Not ideal for on the go.
If you're looking for a good performance on a FHD gaming laptop then the price combined with 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD make this s slick deal.

I would consider buying this unless I needed portability and better battery life, but then you're looking at no GPU or a lot more $$.

Good specs, but as the owner of a G15, I would never buy another one. Build quality sucks, and unless things have changed in the last couple of years, these things get unbearably hot.
100% agree - this was my first Dell laptop, and while it functions well enough, the thermal design is sub-par at best, making the underlying components (albeit, a great combination of hardware) largely useless due to thermal throttling. It's actually embarrassing that my wife's Dell laptop initializes nearly twice as fast despite having older hardware. And don't get me started on the battery life. Slick deal for sucker quality.

How are these 2 comparable?

One costs 50% more.
It's not even that it's 50% more, the use cases are also completely different.

If you're using this for purely gaming, the $1,000 price point is not that exciting for an RTX 4060 at this point. Sure, you get a ton of RAM and a nice SSD- but 32 GB RAM is still overkill for gaming, and I would have rather seen half the RAM to save some on the price.

I would say this is not a bad deal by any means, but personally I wouldn't pay that much to be stuck with a 4060.

A 4070 on this Dell G15 would be overkill; I think the 4060 is a perfect fit. This seems like a great deal and an ideal combination for both gaming and productivity. While adding a 4070 would certainly improve gaming performance slightly, it would likely come at the expense of other factors like battery life or processor efficiency.
I recently bought a Lenovo Legion Slim 5 from Micro Center. The specs were: 16GB RAM, 4070 8GB dGPU, and AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS. I got it for $850. Everything was perfect except for the battery life and the processor. Even though the processor was a newer chip, it lacked an iGPU, meaning I couldn't turn off the dGPU, which resulted in excessive battery consumption. It hardly lasts an hour and a half. The benchmarks weren't impressive either. Despite being a newer version, it was outperformed by the older 7845HS.
I read reviews of this Dell G15 on Dell's website, and the cooling system seems very effective. I'm not sure what others are saying above—I think they might have purchased an older model, which could explain any issues with hardware. This newer version doesn't seem to have those problems.
The only cons, in my opinion, are the bulky look, plastic build, and the massive power brick. Other than that, it should meet all your needs. I've ordered one; let's see how it goes! Thanks, OP!

I'm not sure what any of this has to do with the current deal. It is a good antecdote to prove that you do not understand hardware interoperability, or researching purchases, but that is all. I'm glad you got all that off your chest though.

It would very much not be overkill. That CPU is definitely not going to bottleneck a 4070.

I wrote what I felt would be helpful for others making a similar choice, but alright, NPC, I'm not here to argue with you.
P.S. I'm the first to admit I'm not some 'tech god,' but trust me, I've done my research. Probably been at this before you were even around. Glad you took time out of your day for that snarky reply—always a pleasure seeing how easy it is to trigger folks like you. Guess we know who the real 'Karen' is here. Good job!

Totally get what you're saying about the CPU, but my point is about the screen resolution. A 4070 paired with a 1080p screen doesn't fully take advantage of what the GPU can deliver. For my preference, a 4070 really shines on a 2560x1600 screen or higher, where you'd see a noticeable difference in clarity and detail. So while the CPU might keep up, the screen resolution still caps the overall experience, which is why I'd call it overkill.

I have plenty of games though where my desktop 3060 Ti barely cuts it for 60 FPS 1080p on demanding games, or is 10-20 shy of locked 120 on less demanding games.

There is definitely plenty of reason to buy a 4070 for 1080p if you value high refresh rate over resolution.

this dell, per the following reviews, runs 10-20c hotter than comparable 4060 and 4070 laptops:

scroll to thermal section:

dell 5530 4060 max temp 62.2c
asus x16 4060 max temp 46c
asus g18 4070 max temp 47c

https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...lim-5-2023

legion pro 4060, hottest part of laptop 51.88c

how can a laptop of similar parts run 20c hotter?

the answer is poor ineffective cooling
