In california, anythin above 750W will not be considered e-bike, and will be legally classified as a motorized vehicle, which requires registration, a motorcycle license, and insurance
California sucks.
Sorry if you live there

California law limits electric bike motors to 750W, so bikes above that are illegal. Manufacturers should follow these rules.
They are not illegal in California. Read the comments already posted. They are not classified as e-bikes. California is not even the strictest state for the power limits!

No need to restrict sales, but it would be better for sellers to advise shoppers to check their local laws and regulations before buying any e-bike.
In Ohio for example, scooters and mopeds are regulated like motorcycles, but not the same regulations in Indiana where I came from before.

If you want this one and can get your MC license you can register and use it in CA.

Can they just sell road legal bikes at 750W instead of encouraging people to break the law?
According to California DMV at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/han...operation/

An electric bicycle is a bicycle equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts.
They are not encouraging anything illegal. They just expect you to do your own research on the regulations where you live. They should not be required to meet the lowest common denominator for all of the states' regulations to even sell things.

Code works on the upgrade option Herald Plus for $879.00, which has larger 21AH battery and hydraulic brakes.

I just bought 2 Herald Plus(es?), a white and a black.
may i ask where the 1000 watt version that costs 779 after the code is?
(never mind its 750 watt with 1000 peak)

California sucks because it has the same ebike laws as the majority of states?

Not just California, but also Virginia on the east coast:
Virginia has several laws and restrictions for electric bikes (e-bikes), including:
Motor powe: E-bikes with motors that exceed 1,000 watts are not legal in Virginia.
Speed: E-bikes with a throttle cannot go faster than 20 mph.

I guess even if it is greater power then you just register, license and get insurance for it just like any other motor vehicle on the road.EEK!

I think police have more important things to do than stopping people riding electric bikes to see what wattage they are. They do in my town.

So many squares need to get out the house. The speed limit is 65mph here in Cali yet many drive 80. My local rite aid always have shop lifters casually walking out with things. Riding a 1000watt e-bike should be least of your worries.

I wonder if all of these people dissing California understand that only 2% of the US population lives in a state with more liberal ebike laws.

750 watts is the legal limit practically everywhere in the US, not just California.
