So disappointing about the music. There's one scene in particular in My Monster that was absolutely iconic with the original music, and much less inspired with the updated score.

The music being changed makes all of the digital versions of this show a no-go for me. Such a huge part of the original experience. I guess I'll keep my DVD sets until they rot.

The contracts signed for all the music in Scrubs originally (especially the first few years) included the rights for TV broadcast and physical media, but not for streaming since streaming didn't really exist then and no one thought of it. Scrubs was also not very popular in its early years, so the money negotiated for the rights to the music was quite low.

Later on, when the executives tried to renegotiate the music rights to also include streaming, many of the bands demanded more money since Scrubs was much more popular and hence making a bunch more money. The executives got greedy and refused to pay.

My headcanon says that at that point, the executives hired an intern, pointed them at a collection of stock music files, and told them to go crazy replacing whatever music they no longer had the rights to for streaming. It's the only explanation for the garbage we got.

For those of you not familiar with Scrubs music from TV or DVD, the person picking the music originally was a master of finding just the right song to fit emotionally with the scene.

It's a great show, but it feels very different without the original music. I personally refuse to watch the versions with the new music, I'd rather just find copies of the originals online, or even the original DVD's.

I understand that, respect it. but you still wouldn't recommend the show for someone who's never seen the old?

I only have digital content, I dont have disk or physical media, it's either iTunes or I dont watch a show. prob gave them 5k now in my iTunes library. for $ to hour content, seems right. I get it tho the music change isn't as good as original, but is the story etc still good?

So, on Fake Doctors, Real Friends (Zach Braff and Donald Faison's Scrubs podcast), they talk about this. Randall Winston, the line producer at the time (I think that was his role) worked together with Zach Braff and Christa Miller (i.e. Jordan) to license and "sync" the music. When the show released to streaming, Randall Winston was tapped by the powers at be the "plug and play" the no-go songs. He had zero budget, since the show was already gonzo. As a result, he had to work with what he had and tried to select the songs available to him to match the tone of whatever shot the music was synced to. For what it's worth, he too thought it was rough!
So, there you have it. Your headcannon was close, but it wasn't an intern, it was someone deeply enmeshed and held the show in the highest regard -- which frankly, is the best case scenario given the execs couldn't renegotiate the sync licenses.

Nah man, the show is too good to pass just because of a couple different tunes.

Get it on stream or get it on DVD but just get it!

The digital isn't terrible as far as music is concerned but it is definitely not as good as the original score. I hunted down the DVDs on ebay for $10-$15 a season during covid and I still think it was worth it. The DVDs are for the long haul and digital is when I just want to watch something quick or if traveling...something for everyone. If I had to guess the sale is probably linked to the reboot effort to measure interest and drum up some scratch.

not necessarily "politics" but either group that would have the original changed for their own reasons. But nice try. Do the RIGHT thing today.

I swear I read somewhere that either the originals were destroyed or they recorded it in a way that it can't be released in higher quality or in widescreen. Per Zack Braff

Don't worry, it's a great show even without the original music. Don't get me wrong, the original music was brilliantly selected, and definitely adds something special to the show. That said, I've watched the whole series from streaming (my DVDs weren't available for a while) and it's still excellent.
