I am still rocking my mac pro 2013 with 64gb of ram. Is there anything in this tiny tin can upgradable?
The Mac Mini would destroy it in performance. It's probably more cost-efficient to just buy one versus upgrading.

Not meant to be a "troll job 3/10" or whatever you mean.Usually items go on discount to incentivize sales -- because they're not moving stock or they don't have high hopes of moving stock. To give a nearly 8% $50 discount before pre-orders are even in the hands of early adopters, that doesn't set a great precedent. If things are selling well, you don't need to put them on discount.
It's not setting any precedent. As multiple people have already pointed out, Best Buy always offers discounts on Apple product to their Plus/Total members.
This has nothing to do with supply/demand or quality of the product. You pay $50 (for Plus) or $180 (for Total) per year for your BB membership, and the perk you get is a discount on new products.
Different way to look at this is: you are buying a new Mac Mini for the full retail price, and BB will give you a free 1-year Plus membership for free.

It hasn't even been received yet by the first people who ordered them...and it's already on a sale. Doesn't sound like there's high hopes for the product.
You'll never see a big discount on brand new Apple products, but it's not uncommon that there are small discounts on some new Apple products at release time. Even new iPhones are discounted slightly as various retailers compete with each other for customers, as many people are buying these products.

I also think that you're wrong about there not being high hopes for the product, as this new Mac Mini M4 is a killer machine. Insane power in such a tiny package for a tiny price. Apple is going to sell a crapload of Mac Mini M4s, in my humble opinion. If I didn't already have a Mac Studio, I'd be buying one for myself.

Probably pretty good, but the tiny storage is going to be an issue. You can add a (fast) external, but it's not going to be as quick (or as "mini") as an internal upgrade (which is impossible for the end-user and VERY EXPENSIVE from Apple).

To be fair, it would be VERY easy for Apple to verify edu status. So many other companies do this... and heck, even Apple does for Military. The fact that they simply don't implies to me that they don't care.
