Why would anyone want the best source and best picture quality to die ?

The reason not many places rent them is because they're NOT expensive. For example, Oppenheimer is currently available on 4K disk from Amazon for $20, while buying the streaming version is $15. I can buy the disk, rip and stream it, but you can't buy the streaming version and rip it to get the benefits of a disk. Also, streaming versions can be retroactively edited, disappear completely, have no resale value, and can't be loaned to others.

I think this is a record low, no? Thought I'd seen this hovering around $199.99 during BF and other random sales

Edit: Sorry, the Amazon link is for used, like new.

It's 140 at Amazon.

Looks like, as usual low end Sonys do, they have some serious quality, compatibility and long term use issues.

Looks the price has been going up instead of down over the years.

I was thinking the same thing

Its like the last few manufacturers of these have raised their prices..now that LG and Samsung are out of the game

Isnt there a mk1 and mk2 version of this player? And isnt this the Mk1 version? Anyone know if this also Auto detects Dolby vision w/ Sony TVs?

Here is the list of compatible file formats. I notice mkv is not listed. I have come across some movie files that use older formats. I was wondering if there is any other formats that this thing ought to be able to read via usb? Or is there devices similar that read old and new file formats? tia

No you have to manually turn off/on Dolby Vision.

As people mentioned this player can have issues, if you get one just play several disc to see if you have one or not.

I have this. I haven't had any of the issues some mention, but I do know the sticking is an issue for many.

My biggest gripe is having to manually turn on Dolby Vision, but it's not too much of a hassle, and at least it has Dolby Vision. I don't believe the XBox Series X or PS5 can do Dolby Vision for movies.

At this price, it's not a bad deal if you enjoy discs over streaming and watch movies occasionally

I got it for 150 back in 2019, it would go on sale for 150 regularly. Decent player though

I've given up finding one that can do everything I want, but for just multichannel SACD disc playback sent to a receiver over HDMI, is this player good enough or should I wait for the 800mk2 or other to go on sale?

Wait for the 800mk2. I had the 800 in 2017 and never had any issues. Lightning struck it. Quietest and best player I've ever owned.

If I recall correctly this player does not support SACD playback.
You'll have to wait for a sale on the m2.
