Its not as smooth/slippery as the plywood one - it has a lightly textured surface that feels much safer to walk on, especially as you move the platform higher.
I agree with the garage storage - thats exactly what I did with mine as soon as I put it up.
Its great for stacking stuff on the platform, I can stack stuff under it, and I can roll it around if I need to use it somewhere else. Solid piece of gear that will be useful for a homeowner for sure.
