I think instead of just having opinions about what others should do, it helps to talk about what various materials do.
Cotton: absorbs most water, dries poorly, poor insulation when wet, good for sedentary activities, most comfortable, cheap
Synthetics: dry quickly, get stinky unless treated with silver or antibacterials, insulates even when wet, good for high exertion activities if washed often, cheap
Wool: moderate moisture absorbtion, moderate drying time, resists stinky feet well, insulates when wet, good all arounder but inferior wicking compared to polyester, more expensive

Why? For the sake of the Env or something? Do they not wick moisture? Expound instead of just posting a statement.
There are haters here who love to trash anything polyester or synthetic as "plastic," implying that it is automatically garbage and not breathable. They equate wearing Under Armour-style polyester shirts to wearing trash bags, which couldn't be further from the truth. They're loud but wrong, and will not listen to any argument against their incorrect conclusions, so just ignore them. I strongly prefer wool blends for socks, which these are not, but SmartWool and the others usually include synthetic materials for durability and shape retention, and they're wonderful.
